Overview
This is the full performance level for staff psychologists. At this level, psychologists are licensed to practice independently in the provision of psychological services, consulting with peers and supervisors as appropriate.
They may be assigned to any VHA program and setting, such as inpatient or outpatient medicine, primary care, surgery, mental health, neurology, rehabilitation medicine, geriatrics, Compensation and Pension, Vet Centers, and the VHA National Center for Organization Development.
Psychologists diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, and provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders.
Among the modalities provided are individual, family, and group psychotherapies and other interventions such as behavioral health and community interventions.
Psychologists consult with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues. Staff psychologists may be involved in program evaluation, teaching, training, and research activities.
Job Requirements
1. Knowledge of, and ability to apply, professional psychological treatments to the full range of patient populations.
2. Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health.
3. Knowledge of clinical research literature.
- Doctoral degree in psychology (APA / PCSAS / CPA) accredited.
- At least two years of experience as professional psychologist
- Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health.
- Knowledge of clinical research
- Must be a U.S. Citizen. Non-citizens may be appointed when it’s not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
- Full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.

The Overton Brooks VA Medical (Overton Brooks), located in Shreveport, Louisiana, is a tertiary 1c level medical center that serves a Veteran population of 109,246 residing in 30 parishes and counties covering 20,673 square miles in northwest Louisiana, east Texas, and southwestern Arkansas.
The facility is a member of the eight-hospital South Central VA Health Care Network (VISN-16) operating in the Central Lower Market.
The 111 bed medical center offers primary, secondary and tertiary care in medicine, surgery, and mental health. Medical subspecialty care includes cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology, oncology, epidemiology, neurology, nephrology, endocrinology, and pulmonary critical care.
Surgical subspecialty includes anesthesia, general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, ophthalmology, and otolaryngology.
Mental health includes inpatient acute psychiatry ward and outpatient mental health clinics, substance abuse, day treatment, psychology, homeless, work therapy and mental health intensive case management (MHICM).
The hospital has a full complement of ancillary and diagnostic services.
Overton Brooks is a teaching hospital, providing a complete range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as education and research and is affiliated with Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, State University Health Science Center and many allied health schools and universities.
The medical center also works collaboratively with the 2nd Medical Group at Barksdale Air Force Base and is a primary receiving center for military casualties in the VA / DoD Contingency Plan.
OBVAMC is also Federal Coordinating Center (FCC) for the National Disaster Medical System.
