The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo.

This position is located in the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) who’s mission is to promote understanding of the natural world and our place in it.

NMNH has a collection of 148 million specimens and artifacts. Each one reflects a moment in space and time and in these moments, we find Earth’s story.

Experience for GS-09 : You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service.

  • For this position, specialized experience is defined as (1) F abricating mounts / brackets for permanent and / or temporary museum exhibits;
  • using approved drawings and / or verbal instruction from a designer, curator, and conservator for specimens or objects; (2) Working with various materials including steel, aluminum, brass, copper, wood, plexiglass, and / or modeling epoxy;
  • 2) Repairing and finishing fragile museum exhibit components and reproducing original exhibit parts that have been broken or damaged;

4) Properly caring for and using hand tools, power equipment, and safety devices; and producing accurate castings and lifelike models using accepted modeling techniques .

Advanced training in a vocational school, technical institute, or art institute above the high school level in one of the fields listed above is creditable as general experience on a month-for-month basis.

Or Education :

Undergraduate and Graduate Education : Major study illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or other fields related to the position.

Grade 9 : Two full years of progressivelyhigher level graduate education leading to amaster’s or equivalent degree related to thisposition may be substituted to meet theexperience requirements.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
