Position Purpose
This is an opportunity to become an active member of a local health department. The Program Assistant position in the Public Health Division will challenge you to develop and apply skills to help ensure a safer and healthier community.

Reporting to the Human Services Supervisor - Environmental Health, the Program Assistant - Public Health provides a variety of functions supporting Environmental Health, Nursing, WIC, and Community Health Units along with other public health service areas.
Core business hours are Monday through Friday, 8 : 00AM to 4 : 30PM. Work schedule requires flexibility to work outside of core business hours which include evenings and weekends.

Key Responsibilities
The following duties are most critical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Provide additional programmatic support to staff members of the Public Health Division.
- Records a variety of public health and environmental data on various forms, using multiple formats and electronic systems.
- Receipt, preparation, and disposal of the specimens received for testing.
- Inventories vaccines, clinic materials, and environmental health program supplies and records.
- Responsible for specific duties such as running reports and entering data into the Wisconsin Electronic Disease Surveillance System (WEDSS).
- Assists in identifying and / or developing education materials serving the community, clients and licensed businesses.
- Assists professional staff in developing, evaluating, and maintaining codes, policies, and standards of environmental and public health.
- Maintains supplies necessary for use at clinics and other public health programs.
- Help clients, individuals, families, community members, partners, stakeholders who may have questions or concerns via telephone or face to face.
- Engage and participate with the community regarding Public Health activities.
- Performs basic tasks related to the water laboratory, including the collection of recreational pool water samples and conducting routine follow-up activities.
- Assists with achieving contract obligations, including recordkeeping.
- Assist in reviewing health records to determine vaccine needs as well as recording immunization history into databases.
- Assists other professional staff with car seat safety inspections and installations.
- Maintains emergency preparedness core Public Health competencies by participating in preparedness training exercises and planning events.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
Education / Certifications / Experience Requirements
- High School diploma required.
- Associates degree in human services, health promotion or other health sciences is preferred.
- Experience in a local public health agency is preferred.
- Or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Requires a valid driver's license vehicle to provide transportation to and from job assignments, appropriate vehicle coverage to maintain driver's eligibility of employment.
Required or Preferred Skills
- General knowledge of the various types of infectious diseases, including manner of transmission, symptoms, and methods of treatment;
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
- The ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse individuals.
- Ability to educate individuals and explain technical information to persons of varied educational levels and backgrounds.
- Ability to obtain highly personal information in a non-judgmental and professional manner.
- Ability to apply investigative techniques.
- Computer skills, including accessing and entering information; maintaining records concerning patients and case investigations.
- Ability to use and interpret medical and scientific terminology.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, calculate decimals and percentages, rates, ratios, and make use of the principles of high school algebra.
- Ability to communicate effectively with health care providers, community organizations, school personnel, governmental officials, patients and families, and others verbally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain accurate and timely records.
- Operate business computers and office systems including Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Ability to navigate other software programs / platforms based on the need of the programmatic support to the Public Health Division.
- Ability to lift, carry, push and move objects up to 20 pounds, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.
- Ability to work independently.
- Bilingual capability preferred.
