Essential Duties Summary
Work Schedule
Monday to Thursday
Preferably 9 : 00 AM -3 : 00 PM (24 hrs. weekly)
Works during Fall and Spring academic semesters, reduced hours in Summer semester
The ideal candidate :
- Knows how to support someone's individual writing style without leaving in common mistakes in grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Has a strong knowledge of grammar rules, why punctuation is done the way it's done, common spelling mistakes and how to recognize them.
- Is good with context clues and quickly picking up on a subject matter well enough to guide writing about it.
- Knows that the student must be the one to finish the assignment, and the tutor's role is to give strategies and practice skills.
- Can separate their own assessment of their job performance from the student's grade on an assignment.
- Is not afraid to model to a student what to do when you don't know what to do, such as returning to course instruction, looking up definitions of unfamiliar terms, using the textbook glossary, index, and appendices, and using reference materials for citation formatting.
- Can transcribe spoken words for students who have difficulty typing and composing their text at the same time.
- Can form curious and open-ended questions to help the student think without telling them what to think.
- Is willing to learn and adopt new writing tutor strategies and skills through training on the job.
- Not afraid to ask for help from fellow tutors when they need it.
- Not afraid of silence during an appointment, as that is the time when thinking and learning takes place.
- Uses the guide, prompt, then observe model of tutoring to allow students to feel more confident over time.
- Understands that tutoring is not teaching; it is its own area, with limited concept reteaching and more skills / strategies practice.
- Is aware of a whole array of strategies to try during appointments and does not worry if one or more strategies does not work during an appointment.
- Maintains accurate and detailed records of services provided to students.
- Maintains student confidentiality.
- Assists with promotion of ACE services.
- Observes all ACE policies and processes.
- Arrives punctually and submits a monthly time sheet reflective of pre-determined hours and schedule.
- Communicates regularly with the ACE leadership regarding any issues, concerns, and suggestions for tutoring and improvement of tutoring services for students.

Salary Range $18.00 per hour Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or higher in English or a related field.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficient understanding of Microsoft 365 suite, particularly Word, Word online, Power Point
- Ability to walk students through formatting papers in MLA and APA format
- Solid understanding of file management (cloud vs. computer)
- Ability to work with students on concepts from foundational reading and writing skills to polishing research papers
- Ability to communicate warmly, respectfully, and clearly to all types of students
- Ability to work effectively and collegially with others
- A commitment to active learning
- Enthusiasm for course content and learning strategies
- Experience with creating an inclusive learning environment (or willingness to learn)
- Exceptional customer service skills with people internal and external to the institution
- Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission of a comprehensive community college
- Flexible and adaptive to change
- Excellent written communication skills
- Good organizational and time management skills
Preferred Qualifications Physical Demands
ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information, analyze data, make assessments, and exercise good judgment to make decisions;
possess ease of mobility within the work environment and other areas of campus; and effective use of all forms of communication (oral, visual, auditory), including use of computers.
Be able to lift weights up to 10 pounds on a regular basis
