Job Summary : This is the lead position and is responsible for managing the university's research safety program, including the safe, secure, and legal handling of biological agents and toxins, and the proper management of hazardous materials in a growing research and teaching environment through an active and responsive laboratory safety program.

The incumbent is responsible for the university's Select Agent Program.

Job Responsibilities :

40%-Leads the Biological Safety programs for the university. Utilizes the BSL 3 Safety Committee to execute the safety and environmental programs for high containment research.

Serves as the principal EHS representative, coordinator, and secretary for the Inter-institutional Biological and Recombinant DNA safety Committee(IBRDSC).

Manages the Select Agent Program and provides support to the Responsible Official(RO) as an Alternate Responsible(ARO).Serves as the Biological Safety Officer as required for high containment labs and select agents labs by the CDC and NIH.

35%- Directs the Research Safety programs for EHS relating to laboratory, chemical, and biological safety. Provide direction to research safety professionals who mange those programs for the University.

Serves on the LSU Research Safety Committee.

15%-Monitors emerging requirements and develops compliance plans for the university as necessary for federal agencies, University policies, and other regulatory bodies.

Collaborates and develops training programs to support the safety programs for research labs. Presents and publishes on-line and classroom programs for laboratory workers and support staff.

10%-Maintains records to satisfy programs related to research to ensure compliance. Maintains up to date knowledge in the professional field related to EHS through professional development.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.

Minimum Qualifications : Bachelor's degree in a Science related field with 3 years of experience with specific experience in administration of EH&S programs for private or academic biological and / or DNA research facilities.

Master of Science may substitute for 2 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications : PH.D in Microbiology, Public Health, or similar field with 10 years of experience with specific experience in administration of EH&S programs for private or academic biological and / or DNA research facilities.

Certification as a Certified Biological Safety Professional is desired.

Special or Physical Qualifications : The day to day requirements of the position are fairly predictable. Occasionally, the incumbent will respond to emergency situations, which require physical stamina and use of a respirator in stressful circumstances.

Per PS-18 this position is deemed essential to campus operations and will be required to report to or remain on campus during times of emergency or closure.

Due to the nature of the position and / or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug / alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.
