The Center for Academic Engagement’s Journeyman / Skilled Trades Tutor are skilled and experienced workers whose role will align with the industry in which they are involved (i.
e., welders, electricians, machinists, automotive technicians, etc.). As a provider of learning and technical support, the journeyman will utilize their skills and expertise while leading unskilled or entry-level students, overseeing student projects, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
Journeyman will also possess the ability to work independently with little to no supervision, a commitment to continuous learning, and the motivation to mentor apprentices within their realm of influence.
Duties / Functions
- Guide entry-level students, i.e. apprentices, to develop the skills and competencies of the vocation or industry.
- Inspect to diagnose problems areas in each student’s work.
- Coordinate with faculty develop, implement, and inspect student projects.
- Conduct workshops to reinforce project elements.
- Use a variety of instructional techniques to meet students’ learning needs.
- Integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize students’ potential for academic progress.
- Collaborate with Center for Academic Engagement staff, College faculty, Student Support Services staff, and other constituents to deliver a comprehensive learning support program.
- Maintain a positive, learner-centered, and professional environment.
- Develop resources for student, faculty, and staff use.
- Follow and communicate Center for Academic Engagement policies and procedures.
- Keep accurate records of performance, and progress.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance learning support skills, and industry knowledge.
- Promote the college’s tutoring and journeyman program during outreach activities and events.
- Demonstrate and model the college’s employability skills : adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility, and teamwork.

Education Required
- Earned a high school diploma or General Educational Development ( GED ).
- Completion of an apprenticeship program
- Earn a certificate and / or an associate’s degree from a regionally accredited postsecondary institution with documented successful completion of undergraduate coursework in desired industry trade(s).
Education Preferred
- Completion of an apprenticeship program
- An associate’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited postsecondary institution with documented successful completion of undergraduate coursework in desired industry.
- Demonstrated knowledge and competency in industry-related vocation.
Experience Required
One year of experience as a journeyman and / or providing learning support within your vocation
Experience Preferred
- Three years of experience as a journeyman and providing learning support within your vocation
- Previous work experience in an educational institution instructing English language learners, students with disabilities, and adult learners.
- Proficiency in using the Canvas learning management systems.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft environments.
KSA Required
The Journeyman / Skilled Trades Tutor shall possess an understanding of and commitment to the nature and role of the Community College, particularly its open door policy.
They shall have demonstrated personal and professional competence for the responsibilities assigned. The Professional Tutor must be able to :

Department / Job Specific Requirements
Mandatory GTCC Trainings (upon initial hire) and annual updates as required; other required trainings may be added as needed) :
- Must be available for in-person tutoring and open to travel to various campus locations throughout the week.
- Scheduling allows for up to 25 hours per week, at least 15 hours must be on-site.

- Completion of College Reading and Learning Association Levels 1 & 2 Tutor Certification (within 1 year of hire)

Physical Demands
1. Must be able to get to other offices, buildings, campus locations and off-site locations as necessary to complete requirements of the job.
2. Must be able to work flexible hours.
3. Physical requirements include periods of sitting at a computer and standing.
4. Must be able to lift, pull / push and carry up to 20 pounds.
