Job Summary

The Director of IT Ancillary Applications is responsible for providing leadership and expertise over ancillary systems and integration of third-party applications deployed in support of UMC’s mission.

The IT Ancillary Applications department supports surgical services, enterprise imaging, radiology, cardiology, pharmacy, and lab applications.

More broadly, UMC IT supports clinical quality, patient safety, and stewardship by collaborating with UMC leadership, ancillary, clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders.

Job Specific Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership for all supported departments that assist end-users in the delivery of patient care in support of clinical quality and safety.
  • Leads and / or participates in various committees and serves as an advocate for the use of information technology in the supported departments and helps define innovative solutions as they relate to the strategic plan.
  • Develops strategies based on needs assessments to optimize technology and information.
  • Serves as the escalation contact for all supported departments and works with operations to help develop and use information systems.
  • Develops and manages relationships with Clinical / Operational partners to understand business needs and ensure alignment of technology solutions.
  • Gains the support of departmental personnel and leadership regarding application and financial priorities.
  • Provides expertise on the design, implementation, and evaluation of information technology and the impact on clinical and business processes.
  • Supervises and / or conducts workflow assessments to recommend process improvement strategies before and after the deployment of technology.
  • Explains the value of healthcare technology and educates stakeholders on best practices to empower informed decision making.
  • Collaborates with leadership and stakeholders to advance quality management and evidence-based practice measurement.
  • Lead, communicate, apply, and validate effective information technology best practice standards and processes.
  • Manage operational impacts of service disruptions effectively, ensuring ongoing patient care and operations through implementation of established downtime procedures.
  • Promotes and ensures utilization of agile and kanban methodologies across teams.
  • Supervises managers and analysts who plan, implement, maintain, and evaluate systems.
  • Coordinates, leads, and develops the skills of project team members to efficiently meet project goals and deadlines in alignment with the project management office.
  • Ensures policies and procedures pertinent to the department are updated.
  • Oversees, with the assistance of human resources, the recruiting, hiring, counseling, appraising, and terminating employees.
  • Identify personnel development needs, provide training opportunities, and conduct annual reviews for employees, promoting staff retention and career development
  • Oversees onboarding and continuous education programs to enhance the skills of existing staff and encourage career development.
  • Develops the department’s annual operating budget and identify capital budget requirements.
  • Maintains current knowledge of legal standards, regulatory standards, and standards of practice to assure that information systems support compliance.
  • Facilitates and fosters strategic partnerships that align with the UMC’s strategy.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required or requested.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required
  • Minimum of five (5) years recent experience in IT healthcare, EHR development, and / or implementation
  • Minimum of five (5) years leadership experience
  • Experience with Epic EHR preferred
  • Lean / Six Sigma or other performance improvement experience preferred

Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations

ITIL certification required or obtained within one year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Leadership skills including project management and organizational abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively via verbal or written methods
  • Skilled at formal presentations and training in a group or individual basis
  • Knowledge of healthcare operations, workflows, policies, and regulations
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Displays aptitude in all areas of technology and integration
  • Possesses outstanding problem solving / resolution skills

Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships

Internal : Requires interaction with all UMC departments, medical staff, technical personnel at TTUHSC and UMC Physicians, and future connect affiliates.

External : Works with multiple vendors from both a sales and support perspective.

Physical Capabilities

Work is of medium demand; walking, sitting, and standing most of the time while on-duty. Occasional lifting of equipment is required.

Adequate hand / eye coordination and fine motor skills required for typing. Talking and hearing is essential in dealing with co-workers and customers.
