Summary

Reports to the Director of Mobile Patient Care and Transport. Performs nursing evaluations and procedures approved by the Medical Director.

Provides a safe and clean environment for patient care. Participates in patient transport. Must have / maintain RN Licensure in IN and MI.

Performs nursing evaluations and procedures approved by the Medical Director, including :

  • Participating in the inspection, care, and maintenance of equipment, including restocking, ordering supplies, cleaning, and arranging for the repair of all damaged equipment to ensure safety of crew, patients, and public.
  • Participating as an active member of the Ground Transport team, performing duties as necessary and assigned.
  • Evaluating the scene of an accident (when necessary); triaging patients, providing advanced life support, and collaborating with other medical personnel.
  • Lifting, carrying, and transporting equipment (of various weights and diameters) necessary for the care of a patient.
  • Performing a patient assessment, including relevant medical history, and making pertinent observations of the environment.
  • Administering oxygen and assisting ventilation, utilizing a variety of equipment.
  • Performing basic and advanced life support assessments and interventions, including (but not limited to) : Endotracheal intubation, defibrillation, CPR, cardioversion, relief of tension pneumothorax, cricothyrotomy, intraosseous line placement, intravenous line placement, and other resuscitative and supportive maneuvers, in accordance with Standing Medical Guidelines.
  • Participating in the care of patients with a variety of medical problems, including (but not limited to) : Obstructed airway, asthma, pneumonia, COPD, acute coronary syndrome, pulmonary edema, dysrhythmias, trauma and burns, diabetic ketoacidosis, stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, shock and / or coma due to a variety of etiologies, infectious disease, sepsis, hemorrhage, dehydration, and severe pain.
  • Working closely with all members of the health care team, including physicians, other nurses, EMS personnel, respiratory therapists, radiological technologists, and support services staff, as well as family members and personnel from other hospitals and agencies.
  • Measuring and recording patient vital signs, intake and output, and other important clinical parameters.
  • Documenting appropriate information on the medical record, including patient assessment, changes in condition, care provided, and patient responses to care.
  • Administering medications approved by the Medical Director.
  • Assisting other health care providers, including EMS personnel, other nurses, and physicians, as requested.
  • Providing, within the bounds of privacy policies and HIPAA, follow-up to requesting agencies regarding patient status.
  • Expediting the return of the ambulance to service.

Maintains specific departmental requirements by :

  • Attending educational programs and skill validation sessions as required.
  • Maintaining Indiana and Michigan nurse licensing.
  • Participating in outreach and community educational activities.

Maintains professional knowledge, skills and competence in areas of responsibility by :

  • Attending in-services and department services meetings; also participating in program development, continuing education, quality improvement, and attending conferences as approved.
  • Maintaining professional affiliations as appropriate.
  • Reading current professional literature and journals.

Contributes to the overall efficiency of the department by :

Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements :

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license / certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position / department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

The above level of knowledge, skills and abilities are normally acquired through the successful completion of an accredited program of nursing education and maintenance of an Indiana and Michigan registered nursing license.

Three (3) years of emergency department or critical care nursing experience is required; three (3) contiguous years of current emergency, critical care, or transport medical experience is preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

Maintains current certification in CPR, ACLS, PALS, NRP, STABLE, PHTLS, TNCC and Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC).

TNCC certification is required within one year of employment. PALS certification is required within six months of employment.

  • CCRN, CPN, ENPC, ATCN, TPATC (formerly TNATC), is highly recommended.
  • Within two (2) years of employment, acquires and maintains certification as a Certified Transport nurse (CTRN or Pediatric equivalent) or Certified Flight Nurse (CFRN) through the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing.
  • Other required skills and meticulous adherence to sterile techniques and universal precautions.
  • Demonstrates the high-level knowledge and competency that are necessary to perform nursing assessments, procedures, treatment, and techniques.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills necessary to deal tactfully and effectively with physicians, nurses, patients, families, and other team members.

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and Beacon Ambulance.

Working Conditions

  • Works in an ambulance, within a Beacon Facility, within referral hospitals, and in the patient care and transporting process.
  • Works in a patient care environment requiring physical exertion, frequent changes in job demands, certain undesirable patient care activities, and potential exposure to biohazards.
  • Works in an environment requiring walking, stooping, climbing, twisting, bending, and running, squatting, kneeling, and lifting.
  • Works in an environment with potential adverse weather conditions.
  • Encounters emotionally volatile situations.
  • Operates patient-related equipment.
  • Works in an environment where the consequence of errors in performance may result in patient injury or death, hospital risk, and / or financial loss.

Physical Demands

Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk / stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts / wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position / lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.

in a small confined mobile environment to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Demonstrates the manual dexterity tow work with hands and arms when performing daily duties and the visual and auditory acuity to read cardiac monitors, equipment and perform patient assessments and treatments.
