The Children’s Library is a place in the heart of the city for children (birth - 12 years old) and families to engage in fun experiences with a positive impact on learning and community connection.

The Children’s Library is freshly renovated with spaces designed for play, creating, shared and independent reading, and technology exploration.

This new space is over 10,000 square feet with a collection of 40,000+ physical print / media items and located on the first floor of the Central Library.

The Central Library welcomes a wide variety of customers of all ages and backgrounds. We strive to create an inclusive environment for people to connect and learn.

What You’d Do

DPL is hiring a Children’s Librarian to design and deliver library services to children (birth - 12 years old) and their parents, caregivers and educators.

You will create positive experiences and relationships while providing reference, advisory services and technology assistance both in-person while staffing the public service desk and virtually via email and chat.

Maintaining and ensuring equitable access to our physical print / media collection as well as connecting customers to the library’s digital resources, will be a key part of your job.

You will collaborate with colleagues to foster curiosity, learning and joy by providing a variety of programs including storytimes and school group field trips.

This position also builds and maintains connections via community and school outreach, the library web site and social media.

About You

Our ideal candidate has :

Ability to provide equitable, trauma informed customer service drawn from lived experiences and knowledge of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) concepts and practices.

Knowledge of best practices and strategies for supporting children (birth - 5th grade).

Knowledge of children's literature, publishing trends, popular media and collection maintenance best practices.

Knowledge of materials and best practices to support emerging readers in K-3rd grade.

Skill in providing reference, readers and media advisory and technology assistance to customers of all ages.

Skill in organization and project management.

Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility.

Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups.

Ability to thrive in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds and age groups.

Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers and the community.

Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner including setting boundaries and safety expectations with coworkers and community members.

Ability to use workplace technology effectively including email, calendar, internet, databases, video conferencing, eMedia, social media and other software.

We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements will be considered :

A Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program.

Submission of a resume that lists your work experience and a cover letter that connects your experience to this position.

One year experience working with children in a structured environment (preferred, not required).

Spanish language fluency (preferred, not required).

Other things to know

There is no free parking available at the Central Library. The City & County of Denver provides free RTD Ecopasses to employees.

The Central Library does have convenient access to public transportation as well as indoor, secure bicycle parking.

The schedule will be determined by the needs of the department and will include evening and weekend hours. Current working hours are Sunday - Thursday and are subject to change as library hours expand.
