Position Summary

Washington University seeks an advancement professional for the position of Director of Advancement Programs for assigned school or program.

University Advancement strives to advance the mission of the school by creating a culture of philanthropy among alumni, students, faculty, and friends.

In this leadership position, the Director of Advancement Programs will foster deep cultural connections to our Danforth Campus Schools and initiatives through meaningful volunteer engagement and programming.

The Director of Advancement Programs will report to the Executive Director of Advancement.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Manages engagement strategy for boards and committees. Actively engages and stewards volunteers and committees for assigned school or program.

This includes coordinating meetings, preparing materials, and other related activities. Responsible for progress reporting and troubleshooting.

Conceptualizes and oversees programs and events for assigned school or program involving alumni, donors, faculty and leadership.

Manages planning, scheduling, communicating, budgeting and executing programs and events as assigned. Provides consultation to and oversight of other staff who are working on events for assigned school, particularly events in academic departments, programs and centers that involve key constituents who must be cultivated and stewarded.

  • Strategizes and supports on-campus prospect visits with a focus on driving philanthropic support. Manages alumni and guest visits to classes and lectures.
  • Implements and supports giving day and thank-a-thon programs for assigned school or program in collaboration with University Advancement colleagues.
  • Manages award programs and events for assigned school or program. Manages awardee engagement, biographies, videos, and event staffing as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree.
  • Four years of fundraising experience with a track record of successful solicitations or related experience.
  • Project leadership skills, with value placed on organizational loyalty, commitment, pride, integrity, mutual respect, and collegial openness.
  • Development experience in a complex university environment.
  • Operates with a high level of integrity, confidentiality, and discretion.
  • Ability to think strategically and analytically, and then implement effectively.
  • Demonstrated passion for initiating meetings and developing relationships with prospects.
  • Deep appreciation for and the ability to articulate the mission and aspirations of Washington University.
  • Desire to play a meaningful role in the University community and to share in its commitment to research and education.
  • Capacity to listen carefully, learn quickly, and work effectively.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with excellent active listening skills.
  • Comfort working in an environment that emphasizes measurable fundraising goals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituencies within a complex organization.

  • Excellent understanding of fundraising principles, techniques, and best practices.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and mentor a diverse team.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to analyze data, make informed decisions, and adapt strategies as needed.
  • Knowledge of fundraising software, CRM systems, and digital fundraising platforms.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Six years of related experience.

Grade

Salary Range

$84,200.00 - $148,500.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
