UTMB opened in 1891 as the nation’s first public medical school and hospital under unified leadership. For over a century, UTMB has dedicated its efforts toward improving people’s health in Texas and beyond. In addition to designing and implementing innovative ways to deliver instruction to students at distant locations, the school continuously explores opportunities to expand its program offerings and interprofessional learning.

The UTMB School of Health Professions offers certifications, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral health profession programs.

In addition to classroom lectures, our programs offer clinical training opportunities in a variety of settings to ensure our students have exposure to a multitude of professional opportunities.

As a member of the Texas Medical Center, we also offer premier clinical training opportunities.

The UTMB Department of Respiratory Care

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Department of Respiratory Care in the School of Health Professions (SHP) recently earned the American Association for Respiratory Care Apex Recognition Award.

To receive this highly sought after recognition, respiratory therapy programs must demonstrate best practices in the profession.

Our SHP Department of Respiratory Care was one of only 29 recipients across the United States for this year’s recognition.

The Apex Award distinguishes programs for their commitment to excellence in professional development and the education of respiratory therapists to deliver the highest quality of care and elevate the respiratory therapy profession.

Our team has worked hard to provide this outstanding level of education to our students while also seeking out opportunities to grow our program and the profession.

The Department offers both entry level master’s courses in respiratory care, as well as degree advancement Masters’s in respiratory care opportunities.

Professor and Chair of Respiratory Care

The University of Texas Medical Branch is actively seeking a Professor and Chair of Respiratory Care at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

The successful candidate will work with the Department Associate Chair for Education and Program Directors, provide leadership and direction to departmental faculty on matters of curriculum and instruction.

They will also ensure that accreditation standards are met and that best educational practices are known and applied by faculty.

A prospective candidate should possess leadership qualities such as vision, innovation, and the ability to foster collaboration.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Departmental Management and Development.
  • Develop and apply effective mechanisms for course and curriculum improvement, including periodic surveys of graduates.
  • Fiscal Management, Research and scholarly work.
  • Actively participate in schoolwide direction-setting and governance.
  • Demonstrate leadership by example in service to school, university and community.
  • Student Recruitment, Selection and Advancement.
  • Resource management, student success and implementation of teaching and learning best practices.
  • Participation in faculty evaluation related to the education mission.

Position Requirements :

  • An Academic Doctorate Degree is preferred.
  • PhD degree or equivalent in foundational discipline related to Respiratory Therapy.
  • Eligible for an appointment at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level.
  • Should possess experience in mentoring junior faculty in development, teaching, and education research.
  • Should have excellent communication skills including the ability to resolve conflict and transparency.
  • A licensed Respiratory Therapist eligible for licensure in the state of Texas.

Preferred Skills / Qualifications :

  • Has a minimum of three (3) years of administrative responsibilities, evidence of extramural funding, evidence of supervisory abilities and evidence of leadership roles.
  • A track record of starting or growing a respiratory program within an academic institution.
  • Established record of administrative responsibilities and scholarly accomplishments.
  • A solid record of clinical mastery.

Income Package : Salary will be commensurate with Academic rank, qualifications, experience, and educational background.
