Your Specific Responsibilities :

The Senior Health Educator (SHE) position is responsible for initiating, coordinating and providing tobacco prevention and education activities in Miami Dade County under the supervision of the Tobacco Prevention Specialist (TPS).

The Senior Health Educator will assist the Tobacco Prevention Specialist with the development and submission of the tobacco prevention work plan focusing on preventing the initiation of tobacco use among youth and young adults, promoting cessation, and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke.

The SHE will be responsible for the point of sale initiative, conducting outreach and developing relationships with decision makers and other stakeholders in the community to educate and encourage the adoption of tobacco free policies.

Perform community need assessments and surveillance to identify strategies for tobacco prevention, and to develop strategies to effectively reduce tobacco use and reduce exposure to secondhand smoke.

Provide technical assistance to create, implement and sustain tobacco free policy change. Develop culturally sensitive educational presentations on chronic disease and healthy lifestyles, with a focus on the effects of tobacco use and secondhand smoke.

Promote and conduct educational activities in the community to educate residents on tobacco and nicotine use and the effects of secondhand smoke.

Maintain county database of policies related to initiative. Collect and report data to ensure program outcomes. Complete and submit quarterly progress reports for review as required and enter into the Automated Tobacco Activity Collection System (ATACS).

Responsible for assisting the Tobacco Prevention Specialist (TPS) in preparing and facilitating meetings of the Consortium for a Healthier Miami Dade, ensuring that Consortium programs are aligned with tobacco initiatives and completing committee liaison duties.

Submit regular reports as required to ensure appropriate progress on committee work plan. Provide the Tobacco Prevention Specialist with information and update Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade and Florida Department of Health in Miami Dade websites on tobacco issues.

Participate in the activities of the Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade by attending and assisting at events, meetings and disseminate information to various committees and community partners.

Collaborate with the Tobacco Prevention Specialist in the development of media campaigns and county-wide activities. Provide written justification for procurement of services / products to promote initiatives for tobacco prevention and education.

Promote the Florida Quitline and refer community members to tobacco cessation services offered at local level. Promote empowerment by increasing skills, knowledge of tobacco issues and prevention.

Promote a tobacco-free lifestyle in the community. Prepare and disseminate news releases and other communication information to communities through the Florida Department of Health in Miami Dade Office of Communication and Legislative Affairs.

Represent the County Health Department and the tobacco prevention and control program on local committees, boards and coalitions, as assigned by the Tobacco Prevention Specialist.

Attend scheduled trainings as required. Local and regional travel as required. Assure that tobacco prevention advocates receive training on effective tobacco prevention and control strategies and the program’s mission, goals, and objectives.

This position requires transportation of youth and / or adult volunteers to tobacco related functions.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of health education.
  • Knowledge of the methods of data collection.
  • Skill in operating a variety of audiovisual and computer equipment.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate and analyze data to develop alternative recommendations, solve problems and other activities relating to the improvement of policies and practices.
  • Ability to evaluate health education practices for compliance with applicable statutes, rules and regulations.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (excellent verbal and written communication skills).
  • Ability to build relationships and work effectively with diverse population.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate the development and implementation of health promotion and public health education programs, projects and policies.
  • Ability to prepare a wide variety of written material such as reports, memoranda, pamphlets, work plans and grant requests.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Qualifications :

Minimum - The incumbent in this position is required to be tobacco-free and not use electronic nicotine delivery systems, must have a valid driver’s license and access to a private vehicle to perform job related duties, experience creating reports and presentations.
