A Brief Overview

The APRN / PA provides advanced nursing and patient care in the acute care setting, based upon education preparation and / or certification in the practitioner role.

The APRN / PA functions in both an independent and collaborative role with the Hospitalists in managing patients. The APRN / PA is a professional who utilizes excellent communication and customer relation skills in assessing, counseling and educating patients and their family as it relates to their hospital stay.

This position is required to work weekends and holidays as warranted. The delivery of professional nursing care at Stormont Vail Health is guided by Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring and the theory of Shared governance, both of which are congruent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.

Education Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited PA / APRN program. Meets educational preparation or other qualifications within specified time frames as determined / outlined by specific department policy. Required
  • Master's Degree Required

Experience Qualifications

Emergency medicine and / or critical care experience. Preferred

Skills and Abilities

All APRN incumbents are required to maintain Registered Nurse competencies as designated by Federal and State organizations and as outlined in SVH policy.

Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and / or boards of directors.

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. (Required proficiency)

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Physician Assistant (PA) - KSBHA Required or
  • Nurse Practitioner - KSBN Must hold a RN license with advanced practice certification Required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support - ACLS Preferred
  • Additional certifications may be required for certain patient care settings or populations. DEA registration number is required in Manhattan, KS.
  • ACLS required within 6 months of employment.

What you will do

Ensures that care delivered to patients is provided according to the Stormont Vail Health mission, strategic plans, and all internal / external regulations, policies and procedures.

Practices within the Kansas Nurse Practice Act and within the guidelines of management protocols. Supports the established care models of Stormont Vail Regional Health.

Functions independently and collaboratively with the physician and all disciplines to provide continuity of health care services for individuals, families, and / or groups.

Designs and evaluates individualized treatment plan. Assists in the development of research based clinical care protocols, guidelines, and pathways.

Facilitates changes in clinical practice based upon document research. Monitors and analyzes outcomes based on research driven practice change.

After discussion of the plan of care with the hospitalist physician provides information to patients and their families regarding diagnosis, plan of care, expectations, and prognosis.

  • Evaluates the health status, acute episodes of illness, and health care needs of individuals through emphasis on history, physical exam, and psychosocial assessment in collaboration with other health care teams.
  • Analyzes data to identify health / illness problems, the human responses to actual or potential health / illness problems, and variations from the norm in diagnosis, emergent problems, and complications.
  • Participates in patient evaluation and care planning, reviews laboratory studies, vital signs and x-rays. Intervenes as determined appropriate in collaboration with the hospitalist team and within management protocols standards.
  • Under the supervision of the hospitalist department physician, writes and effectively communicates orders in accordance with management protocols.
  • Updates patient’s chart and writes dismissal orders according to the guidelines of the Stormont Vail Health Rules & Regulations.
  • Consults with other members of the health care team to expedite disposition / resolution. Mentors graduate and undergraduate nursing students.
  • Facilitates patient / family participation in health care by identifying learning needs and providing education to enhance decision-making.
  • Communicates new or altered findings to the hospitalist.
  • Facilitates referrals and specialty consults and assists in the coordination of care across the health care continuum.
  • Provides early identification of discharge needs and ensures that appropriate referrals are made with case management and social services, nursing care team and attending RN.
  • Communicates with outreach physicians.
  • Has prescriptive authority per Kansas Nurse Practice Act and SVHC protocols.
  • Assists in the development of research based clinical care protocols, guidelines, and pathways. Facilitates changes in clinical practice based upon document research.

Monitors and analyzes outcomes based on research driven practice change.

Incumbents will maintain bedside nursing skills by providing three flexible bedside nursing shifts per month and may be designated to work at the bedside for further shifts.

Maintenance of skills work and assignment at bedside will be determined by leadership.
