Posting Details

Our mission is to protect the integrity of New Mexico's livestock industry. Our team of about sixty full time inspectors and another sixty full and part time deputies continuously patrol and perform inspections around our state to help keep our livestock free from disease and safe from theft.

We are also the office of the State Veterinarian, whose team collaborates with various government and private sector partners to ensure that our state remains free of diseases.

Why does the job exist?

This position is responsible for ensuring inspectors have the necessary training, equipment and resources to protect New Mexico's livestock from loss, theft, injury and disease in accordance with Chapter 77 and 21.30 NMAC.

How does it get done?

The incumbent will, under the direction of the Area 1 Regional Operations Manager (ROM) :

Provide direction and assistance to full-time Brand and Certified Inspectors. This includes utilizing available resources to ensure inspectors are providing the statutorily mandated services to the industry.

Provide daily supervision by ensuring work loads are being met and distributed properly, acting upon leave requests, approving schedules, conducting performance reviews and evaluations, and coaching and mentoring inspectors.

  • This also includes training personnel in all aspects of the agency and duties, participating in the interviewing and selection of applicants, discipline, and assigning work load;
  • Prepare monthly reports and maintain records of activities within districts served;
  • Work with state and federal regulatory agencies and other NMLB staff in conducting investigations involving health violations, health inspections, quarantines, and health data;
  • Assist in the inspection of livestock;

Coordinate patrols, investigations and complex inspections in districts supervised.

Who are the customers?

This position will serve the industry and inspectors in District 5.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have some supervisory experience, experience performing the duties of a livestock inspector and law enforcement experience.

The ideal candidate will have current certification as a commissioned Law Enforcement Officer issued by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy and will have experience as a livestock inspector with the NMLB.

Minimum Qualification

Associate's degree in agriculture or animal Husbandry, Criminology, Criminal / Political Science or related degree allowable by agency at the time if posting and five (5) years of livestock, agriculture, law enforcement related experience, and / or direct experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification.

Current certification as a commissioned Law Enforcement Officer issued by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy is required. Substitution table applies.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must have a Defensive Driving certification issued by the State of NM.

This position is safety sensitive and requires random drug testing. Transfer to other districts around the state may be required.
