Position Title : Lead Educator

Reporting Relationship : National Assistant Director of Ancillary Services

Position Summary

The Lead Educator provides children with a positive and appropriate educational environment. The Lead Educator supervises a team of Educators and Assistant Educators, ensuring that each child has an educational assessment and plan.

The Lead Educator creates and follows a developmentally appropriate education program and provides in-class instruction to a wide age-range of children who are in the program for a short time.

The Lead Educator coordinates the education team to regularly communicate with the cross-functional team and meet continuous quality improvement measures.

The Lead Educator collaborates with Out of School Coordinators to integrate developmental experiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide children and employees with a positive and appropriate educational environment consistent with the National Youth Advocate Program’s mission, values, and philosophies.

Supervise the Educators and Assistant Educators in the assigned location.

Ensure that the education team complete and appropriately document the educational assessments and individual learning plan for each child.

Oversee data management for the education section in appropriate portals including ensuring uploading of completed assessments and individual learning plans.

Create and follow a developmentally appropriate education program that includes weekly lesson plans, activities, and class set-ups designed to meet the needs of a wide age-range and constantly changing group of children based on age group, developmental level, and observed needs.

Ensure the curriculum includes communication skills, English language training, and education services including basic academic areas such as Science, Social Studies, Math, Reading, and Writing and provides for physical education, recreation and leisure time to meet the individual needs of children.

Provide oversight and implementation, and staff training. Regularly monitor to ensure the education team is following the education program designed to meet the needs of a wide age-range and constantly changing group of students.

May provide hands-on, in-class instruction to the children in the assigned location.

Organize with the cross-functional team to ensure that each child has access to social work staff and counseling sessions during the learning day.

Coordinate the education team to regularly communicate about educational and risk issues with the cross-functional team.

Ensure that the education team meets continuous quality improvement measures.

Actively participate in and / or complete all professional development requirements, including trainings, readings, and pertinent certifications.

Participate in on-call schedule as needed.

Perform other duties as requested.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree required; Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education preferred.

Two (2)+ years’ experience in teaching capacity and lesson planning. Experience in classroom management, student engagement strategies, and classroom intervention strategies for students who have experienced trauma preferred.

One (1) year of experience supervising people preferred.

Teaching English as a Second Language certification or Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages certification.

Fluency in both English and Spanish required; all agency documentation is required in English, while most classroom instruction is in Spanish.

Able to pass a criminal background check.

Proficient use of modern classroom technologies including desktop and laptop computers, internet search, people management programs, smart phones and tablets, printers, fax machines and photocopiers as well as software including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.

OTHER SKILLS

Passionate about the development and well-being of children, commitment to teaching, and serving immigrant and refugee children.

Ability to work independently as well as part of an extended cross-functional team.

A willingness to work flexible and non-traditional hours with a possibility of being on call on nights / weekends, in the service of foster caregivers, families of origin, and persons served.

The Lead Educator will follow a team concept and support agency goals, colleagues and stakeholders. The Lead Educator must be able to effectively work with and be respectful and sensitive to persons from various cultures, socioeconomic, ethnic, gender, gender identity, sexual identity, disability, religious, and racial backgrounds.
