DEFINITION
Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and limited skilled manual tasks in the maintenance and improvement of public works and park facilities.
Operates trucks and other motorized equipment, including light and heavy duty gasoline or diesel powered vehicles. May act as crewleader over several helpers and performs a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
The position includes maintenance within the following divisions : Parks and Medians; Streets; Sewers and Storm Drains; Street Lighting;
Traffic Safety; Building Maintenance; and Equipment Maintenance. Assignment to any division is subject to change depending on the need of the department.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on various City facilities and structures including streets, parks, sewer, and other public facilities
Builds forms for sidewalks, curb or drainage basin construction
Assists in mixing, pouring and finishing concrete
Excavates trenches, lays pipe and makes connections for sewer laterals
Repairs sewer manholes and cleans sewer lines
Paints traffic lines and markings
Installs or maintains traffic signs or signals
Performs USA markings on city streets
Prunes and cares for shrubs and trees
Operates and maintains construction and maintenance equipment and power tools such as compressor, cement mixer, backhoe / loader, mower, vibrator roller, dump truck and other City equipment
Installs and maintains playground equipment
Sewer lateral connection; sewer demolition inspection
Performs general maintenance duties inside and outside of buildings including painting, removing graffiti, installing doors and windows, and moving furniture
Performs carpentry duties and repairs a variety of interior and exterior building and facility components and systems including plumbing and electrical systems
Orders supplies and materials as necessary

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Knowledge of :
Methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance and repair related to the area of work assigned
Common tools, equipment, materials and methods used in public works and park maintenance
Methods and techniques of repairing sidewalks, curbs and related maintenance areas
Practices and procedures of traffic control
Principles and practices of record keeping; occupational hazards and standard safety practices
Ability to :
Operate and make minor repairs and adjustments to trucks and other City equipment
Mechanical aptitude
Perform a variety of maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned
Perform heavy manual labor
Read and write
Follow written and oral directions
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Education and Experience : Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain this required knowledge would be :
Educational achievement equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of varied experience in maintenance or construction work including some semi-skilled assignments and equipment operation.
Licenses / Certificates : Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License with a safe driving record is required and must be maintained as valid during the course of employment.
