Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; valid driver’s license; successful completion of department required physical agility standards including vision & hearing testing & background check.

The final applicant accepted for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use. An applicant with a positive test result will not be offered employment, per Section 3719.

01 & 3719.41 of Ohio Revised Code. Must be 21 years of age, Ohio resident & United States citizen at time of appointment.

Probationary period is one year.

Supplemental Information :

Pursuant to ORC 5502.14, the Department of Public Safety shall not employ or designate a person as an enforcement agent if the person previously has been convicted of or has plead guilty to a felony.

• Possible disqualifiers : Recently used any drug of abuse that was not prescribed by a physician; recently used marijuana;
• ever sold or established a pattern of abuse of any felony drug of abuse; pleaded guilty or no contest to, or had a conviction for, driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs within the past five years or more than one charge ever;
• currently in the pretrial process for any criminal charge other than a traffic violation; currently have six or more points on a driving record in any jurisdiction;
• ever been convicted of or pleaded guilty or no contest to aggravated vehicular homicide or aggravated vehicular assault;
• failed to meet the requirements of child support statutes, or a court order relating to the subject, due to a reason other than an inability to pay;

ever been an instigator in any act covered in Chapter 2907 Sex Offenses of the Ohio Revised Code; ever been convicted of domestic violence or a domestic violence related offense.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT : Must successfully complete basic peace officer training during probationary period.

Enforcement Agents must successfully complete basic peace officer training before carrying firearms & making arrests. Must qualify semi-annually in use of firearm;

annually in use of shotgun, defensive driving & unarmed self-defense. Must re-certify in CPR annually & every 3 yrs. in multi-media first aid training.

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS : Requires overnight travel. Exposed to physical harm. Search warrants conducted on hazardous premises such as homes, bars & trash dumpsters.

Investigations occur in high crime areas. May work a non-standard schedule consisting of late night, early morning, weekends, and holidays.

Conditions may warrant working longer than regular scheduled hours. May be exposed to; violent individuals who are armed (guns, knives, etc.

may evade or resist arrest, attempt to cause injury or death to another, and / or be under the influence of alcohol / drugs;

work in hazardous environments and situations, may be exposed to communicable diseases. Subject to automatic relocation.

This position may be filled by a layoff or certification eligibility list.

Individuals selected for hire and not OPOTC certified will be required to attend a 26 week basic peace officer training course.

This position is essential, meaning the duties this job performs are critical to the continued operations of the Ohio Department of Public Safety during a public safety emergency (OAC 123 : 1-46-01 & DAS Directive HR-D-11).

This position will be required to report for duty during any public safety emergency.

This position will be filled in accordance with the bargaining unit agreement if applicable.

Position is identified as safety sensitive & is subject to random drug & alcohol testing in accordance with DPS 501.24
