There are two (2) vacancies in the Maintenance Unit.
This recruitment is being conducted to fill two (2) vacancies and will establish an eligibility list which may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur during the active status of the eligibility list.
Depending on qualifications, an individual may be hired as a Mechanic I, II, or III.
PLEASE NOTE : An 8% salary increase is currently pending Board of Directors Approval. Salary Range :
Mechanic I GU 172 ($31.6390 - $38.5496)
Mechanic II GU 176 ($38.4496 - $46.8476)
Mechanic III GU 179 ($44.5111 - $54.2323) FLSA : Non-Exempt
Probationary Period : 12 months Mechanic I :
Under direct supervision, assists higher-level maintenance staff in a wide range of facility, plant, machinery and equipment maintenance and repair work;
and performs related duties as assigned.
Mechanic II and III :
Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled technical duties in the construction, installation, maintenance, repair and servicing of sophisticated and complex mechanical systems and machinery used in the production, treatment, storage, transmission and distribution of water, wastewater, recycled water and composting;
maintains plants and buildings including painting and plumbing, performs skilled welding and machine shop duties; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Mechanic I :
A Mechanic I performs entry-level work in the semi-skilled and skilled maintenance trades while under the direction of a journey-level mechanic.
Incumbents must gain proficiency and attain the skills necessary to function at the next higher level while independently providing semi-skilled facilities, plumbing, masonry, fabrication, painting and maintenance work.
Employees in this class typically report to an Operations, Maintenance, Compost or Facilities Program Supervisor.
Mechanic II :
Mechanic II is the skilled journey-level class in this class series. Incumbents perform journey-level duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of water, wastewater, recycled water, groundwater recharge and composting facilities, transmission systems and related equipment.
Incumbents perform plant mechanic, machinist, welder, crane operator, rigger, plumber, pipefitter and machine tool operation.
All incumbents are qualified to perform preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance of the Agency's equipment and facilities.
Employees in this class typically report to an Operations, Maintenance, Compost or Facilities Program Supervisor and may provide technical direction to lower-level mechanics.
Mechanic III :
Mechanic III requires a higher level of knowledge, experience and certification in the preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance of the Agency's equipment and facilities.
Incumbents may also provide work guidance to lower-level staff. Assignments vary, and some jobs may require a mechanic with more specialized knowledge.
Employees in this class typically report to an Operations, Maintenance, Compost or Facilities Program Supervisor and may provide technical direction to lower-level mechanics.
Employees in this class typically report to a Maintenance Supervisor and provide lead work direction and guidance to Mechanics.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES :
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE :
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above is :
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
Mechanic I : One year of experience in semi-skilled maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Experience in a public agency is preferred.
Mechanic II :
Three years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of wastewater / water, recycled water and composting facilities and equipment or similar industrial mechanical maintenance and repair experience;
or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Mechanic III :
A Mechanic II may be considered for advancement to Mechanic III after demonstrating proficiency to perform the full range of duties of the latter class;
obtaining the specified licenses, certificates, and special requirements of the Mechanic II class as described in the General Unit Memorandum of Understanding.
LICENSES; CERTIFICATES; SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
A valid California Class C driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Agency's vehicle insurance program.
Mechanic I Within 6 months of appointment and during the course of employment obtain and maintain the following :
CPR and First Aid Certification
Confined Space Certification
Approved and qualified use of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
Forklift Certification
In some assignments, the incumbent must possess and maintain :
California Class A or B driver's license
Boom Truck Fixed Cab Operator Certification from the National Commission for the
Certification of Crane Operators
Weighmaster Certification
Within 12 months of hire or promotion obtain :
California Water Environment Association Mechanical Technologist Grade 1 Certification
Mechanic II
Within 12 months of appointment or promotion and during the course of employment obtain and maintain the following :
CPR and First Aid Certification

SELECTION PROCESS :
