The part-time school crossing guard hours are scheduled on an as needed basis. The person in this position is responsible for the safety of school-age children,
while they are crossing the street in designated cross-walks.
QUALIFICATIONS :
- Applicants must have a high school diploma or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma from an accredited school.
- Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License.
- Applicants must successfully pass an extensive background investigation, CVSA (similar in nature ot a polygraph), physical and drug screening.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
Works mostly in the field with close personal contact with the public and where exposure to outdoor elements, noisy environment, threat of bodily harm, and / or hazardous
conditions and pathogens is foreseeable.
Part Time Crossing Guards are on a call list. If an full time Guard is out sick, needs a crossing time or day off the part time Guard will be called
to fill in. Upon resignation / retirement of a full time Guard, the part time Guards are contacted by seniority and may be offered a full time position.
Each school crossing varies in duty times. These are set times for the morning and afternoon. Each part time Guard is given a list of crossing
locations and the time associated for each for easy review if called.
ABILITIES :
This position may be restricted to standing for long periods of time and has to have the heightened awareness to surroundings and be cognizant of the location of all children
in the immediate area and follow established safety precautions inn avoidance of injury or accidents. This position frequently performs such tasks as grasping, pushing, pulling,
reaching, above his / her head and / or away from his / her body, lifting and carrying items up to 10 lbs. Communicates effectively with agency personnel, various governmental agencies,
and the public. Effective communication skills : reading, writing and speaking English; listening and hearing.
DUTIES MAY INCLUDE :
Stopping traffic flow with sign / hand signals.
Directing and / or escorting pedestrians across the street.
Resume traffic flow with sign / hand signals.
Counsel pedestrians who ignore directions or traffic device.
Report offenders (pedestrians or drivers) to the supervisor.
Completes other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
