Job Overview : Medical Assistant
At RHG, the Medical Assistant is responsible for a variety of patient care, technical, and clerical related functions and is a critical part of the care team.
The Medical Assistant is responsible for the clinic patient flow by assisting members of the patient care team and providing a broad range of health care services.
The Medical Assistant functions under the direction of the providers (MDs, DOs, NPs, and PAs), nurses, and / or practice manager.
You will provide care for the patient under the provider’s direction and facilitate positive interactions with the patient and provider resulting in an improved provider and patient experience.
Duties include preparing the patient for exams, assisting during treatments, coordinating tests and follow-up care, recording treatment in the medical record, and assisting with explaining basic instructions to the patient / family.
RHG Medical Assistants demonstrate competency and skills to serve patients of all ages including infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
Essential Job Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities :

- Perform chart review and preparation prior to visit
- Engage the patient before the office visit to prepare them and set expectations
- Begin to plan for any necessary services or steps required in the clinic per established protocols (e.g. flu vaccine, blood draw)
- Ensure efficient patient flow by preparing for the visit, rooming patients in a timely manner, getting necessary information, and assisting the provider with staying timely on their schedule
- Obtain vital signs, patient medical history, medication dosage and frequency, patient allergies,
- Collects phlebotomy and other lab specimens; performs basic waived lab tests such as urine dip sticks, rapid strep, throat culture, and wound culture
- Deliver patient screenings per protocols such as hearing or visual acuity
- Assist providers as needed with medical examination and procedures
- Provide patient care in line with training, certification and regulations (e.g. vaccine administration, dressing changes, catheterizations)
- Catalogs and communicates patient needs to the care provider and broader care team
- Supports and / or schedules other diagnostic and care needs for the patient, in collaboration with care team (e.g. x-ray)
- May administer medication, including Parenteral (IM, SQ, ID); oral drops, eye drops, and Oral and document in EMR per policy
- Apply or assist with application of Durable Medical Equipment (DME) (e.g. splint)
- Ensure exam rooms are clean, safe, and stocked, ready for the next patient visit
- Provide instructions and directions to patients regarding diagnostic tests, procedures, and treatments within established protocols
- Perform administrative duties, including but not limited to, answering incoming telephone calls, obtaining and / or verifying patient information, patient check in / out, coordinate, and facilitate accurate patient appointment
- Maintain accurate and strict confidentiality of patient information in electronic and / or manual systems as established by the appropriate protocols, regulations, and policies
- Maintain inventory of medical supplies as necessary
- Maintain safe, secure, and a healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations
- Participate in care team meetings to discuss patient care and clinical operations
Minimum Qualifications :
- High school diploma or equivalent education (GED)
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program, or comparable healthcare training (paramedic, foreign-trained provider, etc)
- MA Certification preferred or willing to obtain within one year
- At least 1 year of work experience in the healthcare industry, preferably as an MA, Patient Care technician or similar
- Certification in BLS (including CPR) or plans to achieve immediate certification
- EMR experience or proficiency required (preferably eCW)
- Preferable to have experience in Phlebotomy and X-rays
