JOB SUMMARYThe Certified Medical Assistant is a graduate of an accredited school of Medical Assisting and is certified accordingly.
The Medical Assistant practices within their scope as directed by the agency's Medical Director and the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
The Medical Assistant provides evidence-based practice as per the Nurse Practice Act and other governing bodies and demonstrates growth in the ability to care for patients with chronic diseases;
requires consultation with experienced clinicians and benefits from feedback; reports directly to the Behavioral Health ManagerESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Maintain professionalism while conducting agency business.
- Prioritize and perform multiple tasks.
- Recognize and respect cultural diversity.
- Utilizes medical terminology appropriately.
- Must have strong written and verbal communication skills, while building rapport with diverse clients.
- Must be able to work independently as well as deal with documentation deadlines.
- Must be able to work as part of an interdisciplinary team consisting of medical, non-medical, and administrative staff.
- Must be organized, detailed, able to multitask, prioritize, follow up with clients, and measure outcomes.
- Must possess strong community and medical case management skills.
Administrative
- Perform basic administrative medical assisting functions per agency guidelines.
- Schedule, coordinate, and monitor appointments where necessary to include conducting follow-up telephone calls.
- Comprehends and adheres to managed care policies and procedures.
- Utilizes electronic technology to receive, organize, prioritize, and transmit information per agency guidelines.
- Arrange transportation for clients who are unable to get to and from medical and case management appointments.
- Document all encounters in eCW and communicate with Behavioral Health providers routinely on the progress of case management services.
- Assist clients with scheduling / organizing appointments for services.
Clinical
- Triage all clients scheduled to see a provider according to agency policy and procedures.
- Works directly with the providers as assigned.
- Conducts patient history and chief assessments.
- Documents demographical and / or medical information into the agency's electronic medical records with the ability to retrieve specific data accordingly.
- Apply principles of aseptic technique and infection control.
- Comply with quality assurance practices.
- Collects and processes specimens.
- Performs inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Performs routine maintenance of administrative and clinical equipment.
- Assist in teaching health promotion and disease processes.
- Practice within legal and ethical boundaries.
- Complies with established risk management and safety regulations.
- Responsible for referring clients to resources in the community to aid in social determinants of health, including helping clients with financial assistance, housing, and other community resources in the Richmond metro area.
- Monitor, evaluate, and coordinate services per client needs

- Adaptability- the individual must be able to adapt to ever-changing conditions.
- Computer Literate- the individual must have sufficient knowledge and skill to be able to use computers; familiar with the operation of computers.
- Strong Work Ethic- the individual must be able to uphold the values and goals of Capital Area Health Network by performing the job to the best of his / her ability.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCES
- Graduate of an accredited school of Medical Assisting and certified accordingly to practice in the State of Virginia.
- Current CPR / BLS certification is required.
- Experience as a Certified Medical Assistant within a community health and / or public health setting is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
