The University of Iowa is seeking a Graduate Student Success Advisor to deliver a wide range of services through the Graduate College's Graduate Success Center, focusing on career development and fellowship support for graduate students and postdocs.
Key responsibilities include conducting one-on-one meetings to provide feedback on professional development and career materials, delivering presentations on topics such as professional development, job search strategies, and networking, and supporting external fellowship and grant applications.
Specific Job Duties and Tasks
- Provide individual consultations to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars on strategies for applying to nationally competitive fellowships and grants, offering guidance on writing techniques and suggestions for local or university activities that enhance future applications.
- Offer detailed feedback on application materials for a wide range of fellowship and grant opportunities, including cross-disciplinary awards.
- Provide individualized career support to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, offering feedback on job application materials and discussing strategies for navigating the job search process.
- Present career and professional development topics to campus organizations, including student groups, graduate courses, and programs as requested.
- Assist in the development of surveys related to the graduate student and postdoc experience at Iowa.
- Survey program webpages and provide updated information about Graduate College programming to coordinators.
- Develop and update informational materials and resources for graduate students as needed.
- Provide feedback on Graduate College website content and functionality, contribute to and update the Graduate College's professional development pages related to external fellowships.
- May assist in supervision and training of postdoctoral scholars, interns, and / or graduate assistants.
- Develop, implement, evaluate, and / or recommend new services related to student professional development.
Education Requirement
A Master's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Required Qualifications
- Experience (typically one to three years) advising graduate students on careers or fellowships.
- Demonstrates giving writing advice and feedback to graduate students regarding the career paths and opportunities, including both academic and non-academic jobs.
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in context of providing constructive developmental editing and writing feedback;
ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods and behaviors at a working proficiency level is required.
Demonstrated proficiency in the ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive manner while appreciating the unique contributions of each individual is required.
Desired Qualifications
- PhD or postdoc experience in a STEM field or working proficiency with graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in STEM disciplines
- Experience and working proficiency in public speaking and / or teaching.
- Experience with working with international students / scholars.
- Some knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations is desirable.
