Job Description Summary

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Auburn University invites applications for a full-timeProfessor of Practice or Lecturer position to begin August 16, 2024.

This position is a non-tenure track academic year appointment, with primary responsibilities to act as Director of the Nuclear Power Generations Systems (NPGS) minor and teach a selection of courses within the NPGS program.

The position is renewable annually and summer teaching opportunities could also be available, both subject to availability of funds.

The successful candidate is expected to bring experience, innovation, enthusiasm, technology, and leadership to the NPGS program.

A typical teaching load will be three courses per semester, which includes course and laboratory development and management activities.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The NPGS minor at Auburn University was founded in 2011 with a mission to prepare and inspire students to pursue a career within the commercial nuclear power generation industry through classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory exercises, subject matter expert (SME) guest speakers, field trips, and internship and leadership opportunities.

The program has graduated more than 140 students and has a current enrollment of more than 70 students representing all engineering majors.

The responsibilities of the NPGS director include curriculum development and continuous improvement, maintaining and expanding the state of the art NPGS teaching lab capabilities, coordinating SME guest speakers and field trips, obtaining scholarship funding and administering the scholarship program, working with the commercial nuclear power industry to provide students with internship and co-op opportunities, promoting the NPGS program across campus and the commercial nuclear power industry, recruiting students into the NPGS program, providing NPGS students with leadership opportunities and career advice, and working closely with Auburn’s NPGS Industry Advisory board to ensure that the students completing the program have the requisite experiences and skills for a successful career within the commercial nuclear power industry.

Minimum Qualifications Depending on experience, qualifications, and interest, the successful candidate may be appointed as a non-tenure-track faculty member either as a Professor of Practice or a Lecturer.

Minimum qualifications for each is as follows :

Applicants for Professor of Practice must have significant professional experience in operations,engineering, or training at a commercial or naval nuclear power plant.

Applicants for Lecturer must have a in an engineering or a closely related field from an ABETaccredited institution at the time of employment, and prior commercial or US Navy nuclear power plant experience.

Lecturers will have the opportunity to teach courses within the engineering major of their field.

The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in theUnited States at the time appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for theproposed term of employment.

Excellent communication skills and a high level of personal motivation are required. Desired Qualifications The candidate selected for this position must demonstrate a strong commitmentand potential to excel at teaching in the areas of NPGS and other engineering fields within the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering.
