POSITION SUMMARY :

This is a safety sensitive position which performs the maintenance, servicing, repairing and rebuilding of a variety of gasoline, propane and diesel-powered fleet vehicles throughout the District.

Responsible to the Equipment / Fleet Maintenance Manager for related job functions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Determines by regular inspections the repair and maintenance work necessary to prevent breakdowns and major overhauls in a variety of gasoline, propane, and diesel-powered vehicles.
  • Recommending which vehicles should be shut down for major service in conjunction with the Equipment / Fleet Maintenance Manager.
  • Follows trade practice and manufacturer's specifications when making repairs, replacement, or mechanical alterations.
  • Required to make minor and major repairs on a variety of gasoline, propane, and diesel-powered fleet vehicles.
  • Maintains, repairs, troubleshoots, and overhauls complete engines, transmissions, carburetors, differentials, brakes & ABS systems, etc.

  • Responsible for replacing, fitting, and installing parts as necessary. Must be able to disassemble and reassemble any and all vehicle components, check and calibrate after installation is made and make all necessary changes and adjustments.
  • Properly use electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment, special devices, tools, and welding equipment as needed.
  • Complete electrical & electronic diagnosis and repairs.
  • Required to log in all assigned shop orders, record hours of work and all supplies, materials, and parts on work in progress and work completed.
  • Responsible for accurately requisitioning supplies, materials, and parts for assigned work and obtaining approval from the Equipment / Fleet Maintenance Manager before submitting request to the warehouse.
  • Install, repair and recharge air conditioning evaporators, drives, tubing, and compressors, including all electrical wiring to the units.
  • Part of pumping crew during emergency situations.
  • Pre-trip inspection of vehicle required prior to use during shift.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area, including the shop area.
  • Responsible for compliance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Contributes to a team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Responsible for knowing and abiding by all department and District policies and procedures.
  • Attendance during scheduled shift.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES :

  • Must be proficient in the use of mechanics' hand tools and electronic testing equipment; must have knowledge and principle operation of fleet vehicles;
  • servicing, maintenance, repair, troubleshoot and overhaul complete engines, transmissions of stated types of vehicles; knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in vehicle operation;

perform preventative maintenance on vehicles; follow oral and written instructions; read gauges on vehicles, and operate a motor vehicle.

  • Must be skilled in coordinating hand and foot movements to properly operate vehicles to accomplish work; a self-motivated individual who is able to work with others in a team effort;
  • must have the ability to communicate in English verbally and in writing; basic arithmetic; general office equipment and computer literacy a plus;
  • ability to exercise independent judgment; maintain accurate records; demonstrate attention to detail; understand and follow broad or complex instructions;
  • use logic and reasoning to identify alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems when necessary; use initiative and independent judgment while recognizing when to refer matters to the attention of Management;

maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

  • The employee must be able to move about the work environment; must be able to work in a fast paced, changing environment;
  • must be able to walk up to 2 miles per day on uneven slopes and ground; will be required to drive throughout the District;
  • must have the ability to frequently move or re-position up to 50 pounds of materials or objects. Essential duties are performed outdoors;
  • must be able to work in differing lighting and at night; work surface is uneven and exposed to the elements; weather, temperature, and local wildlife are conditions of the working environment;

irregular or extended work hours; occasionally required to change working hours or work overtime, nights, holidays, and weekends.

Position functions both within a shop and outdoor environment with frequent exposure to all types of weather conditions, fumes, dust, and odors.

Constant and more extreme hazards and atmospheric conditions are mechanical, explosives, electrical, radiant energy, mists, gases, dust, and areas of reduced ventilation.

Position faces the potential of serious burns; use of safety shoes, glasses, steel-toed shoes, and leather wearing apparel is required.

Requirements :

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

One (1) year of trade school courses and equivalent training in maintenance, automotive mechanics, air conditioning, hydraulic systems, and light diesel;

or three (3) years as a maintenance mechanic with experience as mentioned above; bi-lingual is a plus.

Education / Experience substitution : A combination of education, training and experience may be applied.

Other : Must pass post-offer, pre-employment drug screen, medical exam and motor vehicle report in compliance with District insurance guidelines.

Licenses / Certifications : Must have ASE certifications in general automotive and light truck diesel and ASE 609 A / C Certification;

must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable; Class B CDL a plus.
