Maintenance Operations, a branch of the Facilities Operations and Maintenance Division, provides comprehensive maintenance services in support of the University's operations.

215. Applications will be reviewed online by the hiring department. Swing Shift Position, hours will be discussed with supervisor.

40 hours a week, shift could be between 2 : 00pm and 2 : 00am M-F. May require some holiday or weekend work. This position is required to occasionally work on-call.

This position is entitled to shift differential in the amount of $3588 per year.

Purpose

Performs journey level preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostic testing, and repairs of mechanical systems in campus facilities.

Performs journey level work in the installation, maintenance, repair and service of electrical systems.

Responsibilities

Performs preventive and repair maintenance on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, steam, and electronic components of environmental control systems and equipment associated with multi-story commercial and lab buildings.

This includes maintenance tasks ranging from changing air filters to replacing electric motors on large air handling units.

Driving University owned vehicles to job sites will be required for this and most other functions.

Installs replacement coils, motors, electronics, compressors, thermostats, humidistats, fans, and other components of chilled water and direct expansion environmental control systems to include commercial refrigeration and process heating and cooling.

Treats hydronic system loops to maintain water quality.

  • Utilizes measuring instruments such as multimeters, refrigeration gauges, thermo-hygrometers, etc., and applies principles of thermodynamics and physics to resolve issues.
  • Works with a team under the direction of work leaders to solve complex technical issues with HVACR equipment.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports on repairs and services according to university and regulatory requirements.
  • Reads and interprets drawings and technical manuals. Works from written and oral instructions.
  • Participates in the On-Call Program. Completes paperwork accurately and on a timely basis. Keeps accurate and up to date documentation of all systems.

Required Qualifications

High school graduation or GED. Three years of experience as an HVACR technician. Type II or Universal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification.

Demonstrate excellent communication skills. Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate's degree from a technical or vocational school. Experience as a HVACR technician in a commercial or industrial setting.

More than three years of journey level experience. Experience in more than one craft or trade. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot HVACR systems with little or no supervision.

Demonstrated ability to work well within a team environment. Demonstrated stable work history. North American Technician Excellence (NATE) service certification or a State of Texas Certified Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician.

Experience at UT Austin or other higher education institution.

Salary Range

$52,000 + depending on qualifications

Additional Working Conditions :

This position and associated job duties have been designated as essential during extraordinary and emergency situations when the university is closed.

Essential personnel must maintain contact with their supervisor and report to work as regularly scheduled unless directed otherwise.

Required to operate an electronic device such as an iPhone, iPad, or laptop / desktop computer to perform and fulfill time reporting and work management requirements.

Work management requirements include receiving work assignments, updating work orders, and other functions as required.

  • May be required to work in confined spaces, manholes, tunnels, elevated work, extended shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Considerable walking, standing, squatting, stooping, and moving of heavy materials and equipment in all weather conditions.
  • May be required to use of personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing duties.
  • May be exposed to loud noise, high dust and allergen levels.
  • May be required to lift up to 50lbs. Often required to twist, grasp, push, pull and bend.
  • May be required to operate forklifts, personnel lifts and cranes. Operate job related equipment.
  • May be required to perform elevated work. Occasional work from ladders and / or scaffolds.
  • May require tuberculosis screening and occasional use of a respirator.
  • Drive University vehicles. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy : UTS157 Section 2.5.4.

Work Shift

40 Hour Work Week Schedule; Monday-Friday, Swing Shift 02 : 00 PM & 02 : 00 AM, hours to be discussed with supervisor. Some overtime, evening, weekends and holidays possible.
