The Section of Hematology / Oncology has a long tradition of excellence in research-based patient care and clinical discovery.

Ranked among the finest cancer programs in the country, the Section is comprised of nationally and internationally known faculty with expertise in all major types of malignancies, blood disorders, and experimental therapies.

Job Summary

The Section of Hematology / Oncology is recruiting a Research Laboratories Manager to help oversee and manage the overall laboratory operations, space, and related strategic planning across the Section.

Responsibilities

Partnering with the Associate Section Chief for Translational Research, Section Chief, and Section Administrator, the Research Laboratories Manager will suggest ideas to optimally and efficiently use allocated space while maximizing research potential;

maintain the University space database and Section censuses for all assigned research space.

Have a 'finger on the pulse' of the Section’s research labs and serve as the main point of contact for lab faculty and staff issues and concerns;

decide which issues can be solved independently and when to involve Section leadership.

  • Organize or manage routine lab needs, including : bulk purchasing, CO2 system monitoring, equipment recertification and calibration, service contracts, equipment inventory / audits, building access requests, etc.
  • Oversee all shared-equipment; secure quotes for replacements, manage ordering and installation of new and replacement equipment.
  • Assist with the analysis of faculty recruitment space and equipment requests.
  • Help new faculty with lab startup and manage lab faculty departures.
  • Communicate important updates and information to faculty, chief techs, and lab staff, as needed; provide comprehensive quarterly updates to Section leadership.
  • Ensure laboratory research compliance with relevant University and BSD policies and guidelines.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously with timely follow through and excellent attention to detail.
  • Use subject matter and best practices knowledge to perform lab and / or research-related duties and tasks. Work independently to assist with project design.
  • Solve complex problems relating to the administration of projects, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making significant contributions to methodology.
  • Perform other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education : Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience : Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience : Previous lab management experience, ideally in a cancer-related discipline or academic research environment.

Preferred Competencies

  • Familiarity with the typical equipment, systems, experiments, and operations of cancer-focused lab research.
  • Experience working with academic research faculty and leadership.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong project management skills, strategic problem solving and attention to detail.
  • Ability to understand complex operational and research-related issues.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Strong presentation and interpersonal skills.
