POSITION SUMMARY
The Greater Birmingham Humane Society ( the GBHS ) is a progressive animal welfare shelter whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome homeless, abused, neglected and abandoned animals.
We are committed to an open admissions policy, animal rehabilitation and a low euthanasia rate. GBHS’ open intake and adoption philosophy is a key part of our progressive mission, enabling us to save and rehome thousands of animals each year.
The Facilities Assistant supports the maintenance and transportation efforts at all GBHS facilities under the direct supervision of the facilities department management.
PRIMARY RELATIONSHIPS
Maintenance (Facilities) Assistant :
- Reports to the facilities department management
- Interacts daily with staff, volunteers, and the general public at all GBHS facilities
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists facilities management with routine maintenance tasks
- Ensures that all surgery and emergency care animals are safely transported between facilities daily, works with management staff to maintain adequate crate supply and cleanliness.
- Perform janitorial duties such as empty trash cans, clean bathrooms, sweep, mop, restock supplies
- Maintain laundry and dish washing areas including but not limited to washing, drying, sanitizing, organizing and sorting
- Clean surrounding areas continuously throughout the day. This includes floors in laundry room and hallways attaching to laundry rooms
- Perform general grounds duties such as mowing, weeding, power washing, blowing debris
- Humanely handles and kennels all animals and ensures the identification of all shelter animals with appropriate tags or bands before kenneling, as requested.
- Provides care for the animals by cleaning their cage or kennel in a thorough and sanitary manner to prevent the spread of any infectious diseases, as requested.
- Provides care for the animals by feeding each animal in accordance with their dietary requirements and posted feeding procedures, as requested.
- Handle and restrain animals entering the shelter, as requested.
- Maintains a high level of communication with all GBHS staff
- Works collaboratively with staff and volunteers.
- Represents the GBHS in a professional manner in all situations.
- Transport animals and other GBHS assets between GBHS facilities and / or events
- Shall perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A passion for the mission of GBHS and a sense of humor are required.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Proven experience in facilities maintenance, lawn maintenance and transport services
- Must have reliable transportation, punctual attendance is required
- Must successfully complete pre-employment screening, including Motor Vehicle Background check
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- A positive attitude and ability to get along with others.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Proficient experience with commercial lawn care equipment such as zero-turn mower, blower, weed eater, chain saw and pressure washer
- Forklift certification and experience
- Experience driving commercial sized vehicles (25ft long and up)
- Experience with animal handling in a kennel environment
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform physical work involving standing for long periods, carrying animal crates, bending, scrubbing, mopping, walking quickly, reaching, squatting, lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds and lifting up to 75 pounds with reasonable accommodation;
ability to work well in a team environment; ability to work weekends and evenings as necessary; meets minimum general requirements for GBHS employment as set forth in GBHS employee handbook.
Ability to stoop, bend, lift, clean, mop, and other such assigned duties with ease and in a timely fashion.
Work Environment
This work is performed in a high noise level area. Exposure to industrial cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal feces, zoonotic (human to animal) diseases, bites and scratches.
Weekend shifts may be required. Safety procedures must be adhered to at all times. Must be able to work with and around animals of all types (cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, etc.
Exposure to conditions such as animal feces, urine, etc. and foul odors. May be exposed to animal dander, parasites and infectious diseases than can be carried and transmitted by animals.
Must be able to work in an environment that provides humane euthanasia to animals.
