Job Description
To support the R&D Mechanical Engineering Department by designing, analysing, and developing mechanical systems, equipment, and electro-mechanical products.
Conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs. Directs support personnel in the preparation of detailed design, design testing, and prototype fabrication.
Drafts technical drawings and executes documentation changes for new and existing products. Provides design information to drafting for documentation purposes.
Actively builds and tests prototypes during design process. Applies both analytical and practical engineering principles toward the development / improvement of products.
May be involved in the fabrication, operation, application, installation, and / or repair of mechanical products.
Job Duties
Support all aspects of new engineering designs by building prototypes, executing engineering changes, designing parts and designing sub-systems for use in end-products.
Design, develop, and build test fixtures as needed for the R&D department. Assist in fixture design and development for the Production & Service Departments.
- Create 3D CAD models and detailed technical drawings of new parts, assemblies, and fixtures. Follow proper drafting standards, geometric tolerances, etc.
- Create technical drawings for a wide variety of part types including plastic injection molded, sheet metal, machined, 3D printed, die-cut or stamped, PCBs, mechanical assemblies, and E / M assemblies.
- Assess the technical feasibility of concept designs through tolerance analysis, simulation software, prototype evaluations, and testing.
- Procure parts for prototypes and perform part inspections / evaluations. Field technical questions from manufacturing vendors to ensure parts are made to correct design intentions.
Perform first article qualification reports.
- Practice a Design for Manufacturing (DFM) approach when engineering products. Assist the Manufacturing / Production department in creating assembly instructions.
- Support : Manufacturing department and production floor activities NCMs, MRB, troubleshooting Continuous Improvement efforts using Lean techniques.
Cost reduction efforts / team. End of Life (eol) and resulting transitions
- Writing of technical reports and presentations
- Create and maintaining BOMs and ECNs in the PLM system (Omnify).
Job Requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME / MET) or equivalent experience required.
- 2+ years experience required
- High proficiency with 2D / 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks and Draftsight / AutoCAD.
- Familiar with standard concepts, practices, processes, and procedures and within the mechanical engineering field.
- Experience with the design of complex assemblies and parts (plastic part design, electro-mechanical systems, Machined and Sheet metal parts, cable assemblies, etc.
Electro-Mechanical enclosure design, hand-held product design, and / or industrial / rugged equipment design preferred.
- Ability to analyse data, recommend or implement appropriate action in response. Ability to work on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
- Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
- Strong understanding of technical documentation requirements and practices to support processing of ECNs. The ability to understand ECNs, specification sheets, and create / edit documents.
- Must be a highly organized, self-managed individual who works independently with minimum supervision and the ability to work in fast-paced environment.
- Decisive with the ability to manage multiple priorities and multiple tasks simultaneously while demonstrating a strong attention to detail.
- Proactive and positive with strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate across organizations to build effective working relationships.
- Practical experience in a Lean manufacturing environment desired
