The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is looking for talented, detail-oriented individuals to fill the role of Natural Resource Officer II.

You’ll work to ensure safe recreational experiences through proactive education and judicious enforcement of wildlife laws and promote voluntary compliance by serving the public with integrity, compassion, and respect.

Assignment location : Garfield County - Panguitch District

Principal Duties

As a Natural Resource Officer, you will :

  • Patrol assigned Natural Resource Officer District and assigned crew area enforcing state and federal wildlife conservation laws and regulations
  • Conduct investigations, interviews, and interrogations related to wildlife violations.
  • Compile reports and other paperwork / documentation associated with citations, investigations, and other job-related responsibilities.
  • Assist with law enforcement outreach efforts, including hunter education, school programs, media releases, etc.
  • Assist with other wildlife-related tasks : wildlife surveys, relocation, nuisance and damage concerns, etc.
  • Build positive working relationships with other law enforcement agencies throughout the state.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have :

  • A minimum of 15 years of employment in wildlife conservation law enforcement work
  • Although not required, a bachelor’s degree in natural resource / wildlife conservation and management / and / or criminal justice is preferred
  • Be motivated, self-driven, calm in stressful situations, and capable of working alone in harsh conditions with limited to no direct supervision.
  • Must be articulate and capable of communicating well, both in person and in written form.
  • Capable of thinking through complex situations.
  • Willing to work weekends and holidays.
  • Takes direction well and is eager to learn new skills.

Preference may be given to applicants with : Applicants with a bachelor's degree may be given preference over applicants who do not have a degree.

Also, bachelor's degrees in natural resource-related fields and / or criminal justice-related fields may be given further preference.

Qualifications

Required qualifications :

  • Current and valid Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification
  • A minimum of 15 years of employment in wildlife conservation law enforcement work
  • Although not required, a bachelor’s degree in natural resource / wildlife conservation and management / and / or criminal justice is preferred
  • Other attributes possessed by applicants may also be given preference during the hiring process : , natural resources / wildlife-based employment or work, post-high school education, etc.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Familiar with and, preferably, participate in hunting, fishing, and / or trapping.
  • Capable of interacting in a positive, professional manner with resource users.
  • Ability to de-escalate otherwise tense situations.

Working conditions :

  • Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, , working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, being subject to possible physical attack, etc.
  • Employees are subject to personal risk and safety; perform duties that consist of preventing or detecting crime and enforcing criminal statutes or ordinances of this state or any of its political subdivisions.

Physical requirements :

Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, and lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.

  • Employees in this job work for the Department of Natural Resources full-time, and must be certified through the Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy.
  • Employees must qualify as a "Law Enforcement Officer" in accordance with
  • Employees perform duties that consist of providing community protection; responding to situations involving threats to public safety and making emergency decisions affecting the lives and health of others.
  • Job requires POST certification; Peace Officer Standards Training in Utah.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.

All new employees must be willing to be fingerprinted and undergo a criminal background check as well as a driver's license check.

  • May be required to pass a polygraph and psychological evaluation.
  • Officers must live within 50 miles of the "focal point" designated for the district where the officer is assigned; relocating to the assigned district if necessary.
  • Working weekends and holidays is required.
  • Officers will be required to be on-call and respond to calls in emergency situations.
  • Required to respond to time-sensitive requests for service at any hour of day / night.
  • Utah driver's license.
