Job Summary

  • The Quality Assurance technician is responsible for : conducting audits and inspections of UCSF care areas where medications are stored and used;
  • documenting and summarizing findings of inspections and submit reports to pharmacy and patient care area managers; assuring compliance through reporting with all applicable California Board of Pharmacy, The Joint Commission (TJC) and California Department of Health Services (CDPH) requirements, rules, and regulations, pertaining to medication security / storage in those areas;

Must also submit regular trend reports of findings to the Pharmacy Department and participate in medical staff committees as requested.

The Quality Assurance technician will work with members of the Medication Safety and Compliance team, as well as pharmacy leadership, to participate in ambulatory and inpatient quality improvement initiatives.

Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides a full range of services for patients cared for by the UCSF Health System as well as its providers and payors.

  • These services include, but are not limited to : drug procurement, storage, and security; safe accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs;
  • clinical pharmacy services for patients; development of drug use policies within the UCSF Health System; drug information services for clinicians and patients;

and participation in technology assessment and quality assurance programs. The Department encompasses with the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic unit within the School of Pharmacy, which has primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the Pharm.

D. curriculum, research, and public service. The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Department of Pharmaceutical Services share its philosophy of pharmaceutical care.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in healthcare profession, completion of Board of Pharmacy approved technician training program, or equivalent experience.
  • Basic knowledge of QI standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of QI models, tools, and techniques, including collection, aggregation, abstraction, analysis, and reporting of data.
  • Detail oriented, with basic organizational skills and the ability to manage time efficiently.
  • Acquiring problem solving skills to assess problems quickly and propose options for effective and timely resolution.
  • Basic interpersonal skills for collaborating effectively with clinical and technical staff.
  • Basic ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, and the ability to contribute to clear and concise reports, presentations, and documentation.
  • Basic knowledge of various administrative and business software packages.
  • Sharp analytical skills and scientific aptitude. Critical thinking skills to challenge conventional practices and apply knowledge to recommend innovative, industry leading improvements.
  • Knowledge of relevant information systems, or aptitude for learning computer software
  • At least two (2) years of hospital experience
  • Excellent skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to drive a motor vehicle, and travel to various locations in the greater San Francisco area

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification, active
  • Knowledge of relevant Pharmacy Department, medical center, and UC policies and protocols including medicine storage, safety, and patient privacy and treatment.

Deep knowledge of all relevant pharmacy federal and state laws and regulations.

Experience or specific training in Medication Safety projects and regulatory compliance activities

License / Certification

California Board of Pharmacy Technician license, active and in good standing
