Support Center - IrvingServes as a technical expert in US and Canada Customs regulatory matters, including US import and export, Canada import, Foreign Trade Zone operations, and CTPAT program.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring Michaels is compliant with all regulatory requirements for the product that the company imports or exports and that the proper duty rate is paid on all products.
This position drives business results and best practices through strong collaboration with functional leaders and teams throughout the organization.
Major Activities
Interpret dynamically changing regulatory requirements of the US and Canada import programs. Act as a liaison between Michaels and the various government agencies regulating imported products.
Responsible for determination and full compliance of US and Canada import regulations including Harmonized Tariff Schedule, Export Control Classification Number and Partner Government Agencies.
- Determine classification and duty rate for over $1B of product imported annually. Provide internal import compliance engineering and guidance, ensuring Michaels maintains the highest level of regulatory compliance and pays the lowest possible legal duty rate.
- Effectively manage people and processes while working effectively cross-functionally with internal and external partners, including Michaels US and Canada Customs Brokers, Order Management partner and Michaels Sourcing, Merchant and DC team members.
Interactions with both internal and external partners are at peer level, as well as Manager and Director levels.
Manage Michaels FTZ activities and provide guidance to DC management to ensure operations comply with FTZ regulations.
Manage the Michaels CTPAT program and ensure Michaels remains a CTPAT member in good standing. This includes preparing the annual submission to Customs documenting Michaels CTPAT program controls and procedures to meet or exceed all requirements of the program.
Educate and collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure compliance to all CTPAT requirements.
Visit each DC once a year to perform internal review / audit of FTZ and CTPAT programs.
- Identify and report to Michaels management any potential violations of trade compliance laws and compliance violations and any incidents involving significant weaknesses in processes or procedures.
- Develop and deploy training for internal teams that complies with regulatory compliance requirements

Applicable Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Minimum Education
Bachelor’s degree
Special Certifications or technical skills
Customs Broker’s License strongly preferred
Type of experience the job requires
Minimum 6 years in Customs / Import Regulatory group. Experience managing or working with Foreign Trade Zones and CTPAT required.
