All paraprofessionals entering employment after January 1, 2007 must be deemed Highly Qualified as defined in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2003.
In order to be considered Highly Qualified, an applicant must meet one of the following criteria :
- Possess an Associate’s Degree from an accredited college; or
- Have earned 60 semester hours (or the equivalent) from an accredited college; or
- Have passed a state approved test (Parapro Workkeys or Parapro by ETS)
Other Qualifications include :
- Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Prior experience working with students in a classroom setting preferred
- Ability and willingness to work well with others required
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs on occasion required
- Ability to assist with a variety of essential functions depending upon the nature of the special needs in the assigned classroom required
- Basic computer skills required
Responsibilities :
- Assist students with assignments as instructed by the teacher
- Work in small groups on classroom activities under the supervision of the teacher
- Assist students with use of the restroom, transitions between classrooms, meals, and any other daily activities as needed and determined by
individual student needs in the classroom
- Participate in staff development training workshops to learn and update skills related to the position
- Assist the teacher with maintaining the classroom
- Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor

This position reports to the Principal of the assigned school but is also monitored daily by the teacher in the assigned classroom.
The teacher in the assigned classroom maintains the responsibilities of policy-making, discipline, and evaluation of the students, not the aide.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy.
Terms of Employment :
This position works 9 ¼ months (185 days) per year and is paid on the Support / Annual Salary Schedule in Group K unless otherwise noted.
