SUMMARY Under general direction, is responsible for planning and teaching Journalism and Writing Classes and publishing a department newsletter in accordance to the needs and preferences of individuals served.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The duties and responsibilities of the Community Specialist - Journalism will include, but are not limited to the following :

  • Creates lesson plans and conducts Journalism and Writing classes at day program sites and in the community.
  • With the assistance of individuals, regularly publishes a Day Habilitation newsletter.
  • Orders and maintains supplies.
  • Assists programs in organizing staffing, transportation and logistics for community based writing activities.
  • Creates compelling and attractive flyers to advertise upcoming opportunities.
  • Works with individuals to create original essays, poems and other forms of writing.
  • Identifies community arts and cultural organizations to collaborate with, and establishes opportunities for individuals to interact and collaborate with other journalists and writers.
  • Implements universal precautions at all times.
  • Participates in in-service training programs as requested.
  • Provides supervision and guidance to Direct Support Professionals during classes and community events.
  • Keeps abreast of changes in the field.
  • Performs other related duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organization skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in the use of a personal computer and appropriate software
  • Good interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with coworkers, individuals served, employees, parents and outside contacts
  • Ability and willingness to adjust work schedule to attend and facilitate events that occur outside of regular business hours
  • Ability and willingness to travel to various program sites.

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least six months experience with individuals with disabilities.

COMPENSATION $25-$26.50 / hour plus Industry Leading Benefits!
