SUMMARY Under general direction, is responsible for planning and teaching Journalism and Writing Classes and publishing a department newsletter in accordance to the needs and preferences of individuals served.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The duties and responsibilities of the Community Specialist - Journalism will include, but are not limited to the following :
- Creates lesson plans and conducts Journalism and Writing classes at day program sites and in the community.
- With the assistance of individuals, regularly publishes a Day Habilitation newsletter.
- Orders and maintains supplies.
- Assists programs in organizing staffing, transportation and logistics for community based writing activities.
- Creates compelling and attractive flyers to advertise upcoming opportunities.
- Works with individuals to create original essays, poems and other forms of writing.
- Identifies community arts and cultural organizations to collaborate with, and establishes opportunities for individuals to interact and collaborate with other journalists and writers.
- Implements universal precautions at all times.
- Participates in in-service training programs as requested.
- Provides supervision and guidance to Direct Support Professionals during classes and community events.
- Keeps abreast of changes in the field.
- Performs other related duties as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

- Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent organization skills and ability to meet deadlines
- Proficiency in the use of a personal computer and appropriate software
- Good interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with coworkers, individuals served, employees, parents and outside contacts
- Ability and willingness to adjust work schedule to attend and facilitate events that occur outside of regular business hours
- Ability and willingness to travel to various program sites.
EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's Degree
- At least six months experience with individuals with disabilities.
COMPENSATION $25-$26.50 / hour plus Industry Leading Benefits!
