GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

The Radiation Oncology Department of Eastern Maine Medical Center located in Bangor, ME is seeking a full-time, highly motivated medical physicist who is capable of strengthening and expanding our department.

Part of the Northern Light Health system, the clinic is located in the heart of Maine with amazing access to city, rural, and coastal life.

The successful candidate will work in a radiation oncology department which will consist of 4 full-time radiation oncologists, 4 medical physicists, 4 dosimetrists, 1 medical physics assistant, approx.

15 therapists, 1 nurse practitioner, and supporting staff.

Our modern facility's (built new Dec. 2009) equipment includes a Varian TrueBeam, a Varian Novalis TX (with OBI and ExactTrac), a Varian IX Clinac (with OBI), a GE Lightspeed Big Bore CT-simulator, a Varian GammaMEDPlus iX HDR unit, an I-125 prostate seed brachytherapy program, RayStation treatment planning system, BrachyVision brachytherapy planning, and BrainLAB iPlan SRS TPS all utilizing Elekta Mosaiq EMR system.

A new CT simulator and surface-guided system is expected to be installed and commissioned in the upcoming year.

Treatment modalities include : 3D conformal radiotherapy, deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH), IGRT, IMRT, VMAT, Adaptive RT, SBRT, SRS, HDR, and prostate seed brachytherapy.

General medical physics support will include, but is not limited to, regular clinical physics coverage, participation in commissioning, upgrade, repair, acceptance testing, monthly and annual QA of treatment equipment.

Position responsibilities include clinical troubleshooting, initial and weekly chart checks, treatment planning consultation, patient specific QA, and SRS / SRT / HDR treatment planning, and other routine clinical physics responsibilities.

The physics QA devices include : Sun Nuclear's MapCheck, ArcCheck, Profiler2, DailyQA3, and 1D and 3D water phantom scanning systems;

Standard Imaging's Lucy SRS Phantom; RIT film / image analysis software; and a complete collection of calibration and scanning detectors, electrometers, and other QA Phantoms.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

Responsible for overall departmental radiation safety. Supports all aspects of quality management program and radiation safety.

Provide support and oversight to dosimetry staff. The position carries the implicit responsibility to apply regulations, standards and guidelines of the following agencies, commissions and organizations which have mandated, or otherwise recommended, the specific activities and documentation :

  • American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) for radiation oncology physics.
  • American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) best practice and quality guidelines.
  • State of Maine Radiation Control Program inspections of facility and records.
  • Assists with The Joint Commission inspections of facility and records.
  • American College of Radiology (ACR) accreditation standards compliance.
  • Accreditation Program for Excellence (APEx) compliance.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS :

  • Certification or board eligible in Therapeutic Medical Physics by American Board of Radiology or equivalent.
  • Active or eligible to become an Authorized Medical Physicist as defined by the State of Maine.
  • Active or eligible to become a Radiological Physics Qualified Expert as defined by the State of Maine.

AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENTS :

Ten hours per day, four days per week with rotating day off. Occasional weekend and evening hours as required.

SKILLS / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :

Applicants must have a M.S. or PhD in medical physics and must be board eligible or certified by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiologic Physics with 2-6 years of relevant clinical experience.

The position requires an understanding of radiation physics, anatomy, physiology, clinical oncology, radiobiology, and radiation safety.

Good verbal and written communication and computer skills are essential. Candidates with any programming skills with Visual Basic and / or Python is advantageous but not required.

Physicists may be expected to work non-standard hours to support patient treatments and / or treatment equipment quality assurance.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS :

Masters (or PhD, DSc, DMP) in medical physics is required.
