Hiring / Budgeted Salary or Hourly Range : The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $80,000 - $90,000 / yr.

Full Salary Range : The full salary range for this position is $67,200 - $119,600 / yr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience;

the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Work Location : Student Resource Building-2260

Working Days and Hours : Monday-Friday, 8 : 00am-5 : 00pm, occasional weekends and evenings required

Brief Summary of Job Duties

  • Provides programmatic and managerial leadership for Orientation Programs and Parent Services; directly supervises three professional staff members and up to 60 students assistants in Orientation Programs;
  • oversees and directly participates in planning, implementing, and evaluating two-day freshman and one-day transfer Orientation sessions and academic year orientation / advising sessions for new students and parents;

manages program resources; and ensures that the campus is meeting the needs of new freshman and transfer students as they transition to the university.

Makes decisions about programming priorities and consults with campus professionals on development of various activities and events during Orientation for new students.

Interacts directly with a wide range of both academic and student affairs professionals including the Dean of Undergraduate Matters in the College of Letters & Science, Dean of Students, Associate Deans of Students, the Registrar and Associate Registrars, Director and Associate Directors of Student Health, Counseling and Career Services, Housing and Residential Life, Admissions, academic advisors in the three Colleges, and Conference Services staff.

Has considerable contact with campus faculty to ensure their participation in Orientation programming. #LI-KA1

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • 4-6 years Experience in a higher education administrative, student services, or academic role
  • 4-6 years Leadership, supervisory, and fiscal management experience
  • Broad knowledge of university policies and procedures (including both campus and systemwide policies).
  • Strong theoretical and philosophical foundation in student co-curricular and extracurricular activities and student development.
  • Effective in interpersonal communications, problem solving, and public speaking
  • Advanced knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization
  • Strong leadership skills to motivate employees and influence attitudes and behaviors

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree preferred
  • 1-3 years experience in orientation and / or new student programming within the higher education field

Job Functions and Percentages of Time :

50% General Administrative Responsibilities

Recruits, selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates all professional-level Orientation personnel, including three full-time career staff members in Student Life & Development and Administrative Assistant classifications.

Oversees the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of two ten-month, part to full-time student staff coordinators;

26-30 seasonal part to full-time student advisors; two to three reservations assistants; and two part to full-time seasonal program assistants.

Budget & Dept Oversight : Provides day-to-day oversight of income & budget expenditures. In collaboration with Assistant Dean, understand and educate participants and campus constituents on the program's fee based budget.

Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and fee package used in setting fees for student and parent participants.

Work with the Assistant Dean to propose program changes, establish program goals and priorities. Program Development and Analysis : Coordinates with all campus offices and services to ensure that all are represented and that student needs are met within the context and structure of orientation.

Designs and conducts major research related to success of orientation programming and identification of trends in student needs and interests.

Compiles statistics and prepares reports on orientation matters, as needed, including a comprehensive annual report. Student Staff / Leadership Development : Ensures program goals are met through student staff training and supervision;

supervises the design, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive four-month training program for the student staff.

Consults with Colleges on academic requirements and advising policies; coordinates with Associate Directors to ensure all staff meet training expectations.

Integrates program changes and approves new and developing training elements as needed. Provides written recommendations for graduate school and professional pursuits.

Works on special projects and serves on committees as needed. Advises students regarding University policy, requirements, procedures, and personal matters relating to campus life.

Represents UCSB at appropriate professional conferences and makes presentations regarding orientation and student development activities at this university.

Oversees and participates directly in the development, planning, presentation of a comprehensive Orientation for approximately 10,000 new students and their parents during twelve two-day, overnight conferences and five one-day conferences.

40% Summer Program Responsibilities

Develops, plans, and presents comprehensive campus-wide summer and quarterly orientation programs for new students and their parents including the following components : 1.

Academic advising 2. Course selection and registration 3. An introduction to student services, academic departments, faculty, and administrative staff 4.

An introduction to student life and developmental issues such as diversity, sexual assault prevention, alcohol and drug use, sexual health, mental health issues, and co-curricular involvement opportunities.

5. Campus tours 6. Introduction to faculty and university-level study 7. Parent programming on a variety of issues. Oversees the design and implementation of registration procedures appropriate to facilitate the individual registration of approximately 5,500 new students during summer orientation in consultation / collaboration with the Registrar's Office and Admissions.

Makes appropriate decisions needed to resolve any problems or crises that arise during the summer sessions involving staff, participants, or other University representatives.

Monitors the Orientation reservation system and participant demand. Supervises preparation of all online and printed literature related to summer orientation, including promotional and informational brochures, parent publications, and student support resources.

Supervises and participates in the details of program planning and implementation, including room scheduling, reservations, audiovisual and catering support, student staff committee work, student staff scheduling, interface with Conference Services, etc.

Participates personally in the program presented during the summer, serving as general convener of each session and moderator of various program components.

Provides daily oversight of Orientation sessions and deals directly with parents, students, Orientation Staff members, and campus departmental staff to ensure a consistently high standard in meeting new student and parent needs.

Coordinates with the Colleges of Letters and Science, Creative Studies, and Engineering on academic advising, with specific academic departments on placement testing, with the Admissions Office and with Transfer Services on pre-enrollment test scores and transferability of courses, and with all other campus offices and services to design and present appropriate information and procedures to new students.

Educate student affairs and academic staff on online modules and orientation course registration process. Collaborate to design program goals and address needs of at-risk student populations.

10% Student Life Admin & Support

Serves as a member of the Student Demonstration Response Team. Supports the Student Life suite as a part of the Directors group.

Engages in Student Life projects and initiatives as needed.
