Job Description
This role is a multi-faceted position involving inspection of bridge and tunnel infrastructure and for those interested, structural design and analysis of bridges.
The successful candidate will be able to manage both inspection related duties and supplemental structural design work. This role is physically located in Boston, Massachusetts.
The work environment consists of a mix of on-site field and office / work-from-home. The ability to communicate effectively and work in a hybrid office / work-from-home setting is critical to the success in this position.

Bridge and Tunnel Inspection Team Leader responsibilities include managing the planning, inspection, and safety evaluations of state and locally owned bridges and tunnels and will assist in the preparation of inspection reports and other documents.
Help complete safety inspection of infrastructure and will prepare detailed inspection reports that document the condition of the structures inspected.
As a Team Leader, you should possess NBIS and / or NTIS certification with complex bridge and / or tunnel safety inspection experience.
This position includes a mix of daytime and nighttime field work and daytime office work. Travel may sometimes be required to perform inspections, with occasional overnight stays.
- Lead bridge and tunnel inspections, including scheduling and setting up equipment, planning inspections, completing inspections as a Team Leader, reporting critical findings, and writing and reviewing inspection reports and ensuring on-time submission for FHWA compliance.
- The candidate will also assist in scoping new assignments, preparing budgets and schedules, performing quality control, and preparing submission documents to the client.
- The ideal candidate will also have experience in completing live load rating calculations for bridges using AASHTOWare BrR (formerly "Virits") and Microsoft Excel and / or MathCAD.
This work would include the analysis of concrete, steel, and timber bridges, masonry arches, culverts, and tunnel structures, from simple to very complex.

Design work for those interested includes complex bridge projects and developing innovative,practical solutions for MassDOT, MBTA, CTDOT, RIDOT, and other transportation agencies.
In this role you will perform design and analysis as well as other structural engineering tasks for bridge systems and components.
- Perform complex structural analysis and prepare design calculations
- Manage bridge / structural tasks as part of project development, including plan and report production
- Develop or assist in developing structural details and construction plans using a variety of industry standard software packages
- Assist and check design calculations performed by others
- Prepare geometric / bridge layouts, construction specifications, and material quantity calculations
- Develop, establish, and maintain relationships with our employees, clients, and other industry related organizations and stakeholders
- Coach and mentor junior engineering staff
- Successfully interface with staff from a range of other disciplines (traffic, civil, planning, geotechnical, etc.) to support a diverse range of projects
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis or equivalent work experience.
- 8 - 10+ years of relevant experience.
- Massachusetts Professional Engineer (PE) License, or the ability to obtain within six months.
- NBIS and / or NTIS certification with complex bridge and / or tunnel safety inspection experience.
- Demonstrate a personal commitment to quality, accuracy, safety, and efficiency.
- Candidates are required to effectively communicate the condition of infrastructure to co-workers and in technical reports.
Therefore, excellent verbal and written English language skills are essential to long-term success in this role.
- Experienced with MassDOT Tunnel Inspection Handbook and MassDOT Bridge Inspection Manual.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a DOT Medical Certificate for the purpose of driving and operating bucket trucks and company vehicles.
- Must be able to work in challenging environments, including working from heights, in enclosed environments, and working around traffic.
- Must be safety conscious and will be responsible for their personal safety and the safety of their fellow team members.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, with a focus on Excel.
COMPENSATION
The approximate compensation range for this position is approximately $125,000 - $140,000. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.
Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
