The Cinema and Television Arts Department of Columbia College Chicago seeks applicants for a full-time teaching-track position in Cinematography beginning January 2024.
In the Cinema and Television Arts Department, students learn to express their creative ideas on screens both large and small and develop in-demand media production skills for careers in film, television and emerging media.
Students discover connection points across media forms and practices, and gain the versatility needed to thrive in an evolving media industry.
We are looking for candidates with professional and preferably academic experience in cinematography, lighting, and lighting design for film, video, and television.
Experience should include fluency in advanced processes and techniques in professional high-definition video formats, significant experience with digital tools, techniques, and workflows, and an understanding of the relevance of emerging technologies on creative practices.
The successful candidate will approach lighting and cinematography as tools for artistic expression that further enhance storytelling.
Experience in both film and television, including studio television, is a plus, as well as the ability to work with media producers in other disciplines.
We seek candidates who can fundamentally enhance our curriculum by fostering a more diverse environment on set and on screen, utilizing compositional and lighting techniques that enhance stories produced by a highly diverse student body.
The projected teaching load for the position will be 12 credits ( 4 courses) per semester. This position will also involve participation in curriculum development of the BA and BFA programs, advising and mentoring students, and service to the department.
In addition to expertise in their field, successful candidates should have teaching experience and be passionate about undergraduate education.
Preference will go to candidates with a record of effective teaching across a diverse student body.
The School of Media Arts (SMA) fosters creativity, critical thinking, and civic-mindedness in the next generation of media artists.
It provides a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment engaged with new creative economies and technologies that transform its work.
Students choose BA, BS, BFA, and MA programs in Audio Arts & Acoustics, Cinema and Television Arts, Communication, and Interactive Arts and Media.
Through cross-departmental partnerships, SMA defines curricular pathways that position students to blur disciplinary boundaries and collaborate on team projects that open doors to the world beyond college.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Teach at the undergraduate and, if appropriate, at the graduate level in areas assigned by the Department Chair.
- Deliver lesson plans per the learning objectives set for the course, including practical skills, methods, theories, and techniques.
- Engage with the broader scholarly and professional communities.
- Advise and mentor students.
- Contribute to the development, planning, and implementation of a high-quality curriculum.
- Provide service to the college, profession, and community. Commit to continuing professional development.
- Actively follow and promote Columbia College Chicago policies.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
MFA or other terminal degree in film making, film production, or related media field with an emphasis on cinematography and lighting.
Candidates with a post-secondary degree in a related field and significant professional experience may also be considered.
- A minimum of three years of professional work in cinematography, lighting, and lighting design for film, video, and television.
- Strong foundations in lighting and cinematography as tools for artistic expression that further enhance storytelling.
- Knowledge of and proficiency with digital tools, techniques, and workflows.
Desired Qualifications
- Teaching experience at the college or university level preferred, with a commitment to innovative and student-centered pedagogical approaches.
- Experience with advanced professional cameras and lighting techniques.
- Expert knowledge of camera systems and lighting techniques. Experience leading crews of various sizes (please specify in the application).
- Experience with the digital color correction / grading pipeline and processes, including on-set capture and digital image technician responsibilities.
- Knowledge of pre-production processes, and ability to teach equitable crew communication throughout all phases of planning and production.
- Evidence of awareness of, sensitivity to, and advancement of diversity, equity, and belonging.
