Scope of Position

The acute pain nurse functions as an integral member of the patient focused care team both within the Department of Anesthesia and throughout the OSUMC, whose members reflect a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm and mutual respect.
The team consisting of registered nurses and other health care providers provides patient care and supportive services that are directed toward achievement of quality patient care outcomes, improvement of service levels, reduction of length of hospitalization and reduction of costs.
The Acute / Regional Pain Nurse functions throughout the OSUMC working with patients receiving care from the Acute Pain Service.
The Acute Pain Nurse serves as a nursing member of the multi disciplinary Acute Pain Service for OSUMC.
Position Summary
The Acute / Regional Pain Nurse provides direct nursing care to patients experiencing pain, using specialized nursing knowledge and experience to facilitate optimal individualized pain management, education and support.
This position requires an individual, who can perform nursing duties in a fast paced and dynamic environment, must handle stress well, be able to multi-task and is self motivated.
Practices also include but are not limited to : consultation with physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel; education of patients / families, students, colleagues, and the public;
and participation in research. The position utilizes assessment skills in the planning, implementation and evaluation of pain management therapy.
The acute pain nurse assists physicians in the placement and management of Perineural and epidural catheters and other procedures required in the management of pain in two locations spanning two floors and multiple ORs.
This nurse monitors the patient during conscious sedation and throughout the procedure. The acute pain nurse removes epidural / spinal catheters and administers medication at the direction of the supervising physician of the pain service.
For Hire : Bachelor degree required, in nursing preferred. Knowledge of Regional Anesthesia / pain management required. Experience in organization or personnel and program materials preferred.
Current ACLS certification required (or obtained in first six months) and must be maintained. Teaching experience desirable.
