OVERVIEW :

Financial Management Services (FMS), a department within Business Affairs, is responsible for creating an ecosystem which promotes innovative and sound financial administration policies and practices that balance controls, compliance, and customer service.

FMS is primarily responsible for financial policy oversight, quality assurance and financial services at Stanford University and its affiliated entities.

It also serves as a liaison to the hospitals and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). JOB PURPOSE :

The Senior Global Tax Manager will assist the Tax Director in the university’s global tax strategy, including implementation, compliance, documentation, planning, advisory, and audit defense.

The Senior Global Tax Manager will manage all aspects of Stanford’s Global Tax Compliance as well as US Tax Compliance as it relates to Stanford’s global activities.

This includes the administration and preparation of US and global tax returns, providing tax advice to campus, and managing the Tax Department’s assurance program pertaining to Stanford’s global activities.

Additionally the Senior Global Tax Manager will manage staff to achieve goals and objectives.

CORE DUTIES :

  • Manage all aspects of Stanford’s global tax administration and returns; develop timelines, manage preparation and review, tracking and analysis of income, losses, taxes, refunds, and tax authority correspondence.
  • Supervise in-house and outside tax accountants who prepare and review the tax returns. May prepare or review parts of the tax returns.
  • Support risk mitigation strategies and advise stakeholders on appropriate in-country structuring options. Coordinate with internal and external service-providers to implement appropriate in-country structuring.
  • Monitor exposure to and compliance with tax regulations, especially related to emerging indirect tax (VAT, GST, DST).
  • Review and analyze global projects, assessing them for operating and compliance obligations to both project principals and participants, and to the University.

This includes global mobility tax issues relating to individuals - employees and students.

  • Research foreign tax issues and work with in-country tax advisors on the coordination and preparation of tax returns.
  • Analyze the taxation of transactions and operations, generate options for structuring transactions in a tax efficient manner, and propose solutions that comply with tax law in accordance with the client’s business needs.
  • Develop and implement controls for global tax compliance across university departments; conduct compliance assessments;

solve compliance issues.

  • Educate the university community regarding global tax matters; design and deliver training and website content, as appropriate.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, lead process improvement initiatives.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :

Education & Experience :

J.D., CPA, MBA, Masters in Tax, or similar degree and five years of relevant professional experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Expertise preparing or reviewing tax returns applicable to an entity’s global presence, including but not limited to, Forms 5471, 8858, 5713, knowledge and experience of US tax treaties, OECD transfer pricing and reporting principles (including country-by-country reporting, master file development and maintenance, local file) VAT, GST, FATCA, etc.
  • Strong substantive tax knowledge and tax research skills in global taxation environment. Knowledge of exempt organization law desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to educate groups of tax and non-tax professionals.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize complex data; high attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to contribute / lead as part of a multi-functional team.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences and client groups.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications, such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Certifications and Licenses :

Licensed attorney, CPA, or Enrolled Agent.

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate.

The expected pay range for this position is $121,000 to $152,000 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
