This position involves teaching parent nurturing / education classes to families considered at risk for abuse or neglect.
The classes are held primarily in a classroom setting. This position may require staffing with the Director of Prevention Services.
This position requires skills in the areas of parenting education, assessing / gauging knowledge base and gain / deficit of knowledge, interpersonal skills, teaching and group facilitation.
Experience and / or training in family dynamics and attachment is desirable. Parenting classes are offered at non-traditional times including evenings and Saturday mornings, and may be provided at locations outside of the regular office setting such as Port Charlotte Family Resource Center, Lee County Jail, community centers, libraries, churches, etc.
This position offers flexible scheduling and working hours. An agency vehicle is available for transportation to off-site classes.
This position will assist in the implementation and ongoing coordination of a post-class peer support group for clients who have successfully finished parenting education classes and wish to maintain ongoing support.
The position also works closely with the Children’s Advocacy Center’s community outreach team.
Performance expectations include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- If appropriate, develop curriculum and handouts for Spanish / Creole / other language speaking classes
- Prepare lesson plans for classes
- Assist part-time facilitators as needed through ongoing training and class coverage.
- Attend team meetings and complete necessary documentation.
- Maintain case records on all clients to program specifications.
- Maintain all necessary correspondence to referring agencies.
- Participate in case review with supervisor as needed or directed.
- Complete all data collection forms.
- Make recommendations as needed.
- Make referrals to other services as needed.
- Must remain current on parent nurturing and education information.
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Education and / or Work Experience Requirements :
Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and / or training;
or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- The degree should be in teaching, social work, psychology, early childhood development or a related field.
- Further training will be provided by a trained instructor at this agency.
