Position description

The project scientist develops major contributions to an established research group in their respective discipline. The candidate must possess relevant qualifications required for the position at a world-class institution.

The candidate must engage in relative university activities and public forums to advance research objectives. The project scientist candidate does not have required teaching assignments, but can be requested to give guest lectures and seminars.

The candidate will be required to collect and analyze data pertaining to the goals of the research project. The candidate is expected to work independently under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Dr.

Jackson Gross, but they are not expected to create a separate research program. The candidate will not be required to serve as Principal Investigator, but can elect to do so by choice.

Research Activities (60%)

This project scientist position warrants innovative contributions to a collaborative research group investigating conservation aquaculture of endangered California abalone (Haliotis spps.

The candidate for this position will also assist the Principal Investigator in developing research goals for the Aquaculture Extension program beyond abalone aquaculture.

Major objectives for this research are to refine hatchery and post-settlement grow-out conditions of California abalone for conservation and production purposes.

The candidate will be responsible for developing projects, executing design, and refining techniques, and data analysis and reporting associated with in support of the Aquaculture Extension Program in the Department of Animal Science.

The candidate will also be responsible for mentoring students and research technicians related to goals and objectives of the research project.

Research Grant Procurement (10%)

The candidate will assist the Principal Investigator Gross in soliciting research funding from government and non-governmental organizations.

The candidate will be responsible for preparing budgets, reports, and presentations that are required by the funding agencies.

Publications (20%)

The candidate will be expected to publish research findings from this project in peer-reviewed publications in collaboration with the Principal Investigator Gross and other colleagues.

Professional Activities (5%)

The candidate will partake in research seminars, related scientific conferences, and laboratory meetings.

University and Public Outreach (5%)

The candidate will engage in community outreach activities such as public forums and lectures.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

The candidate must have a PhD or equivalent in coastal and marine sciences

Additional qualifications

The candidate must have a minimum of 4 years work experience post terminal degree

The candidate must have research experience in conservation and production aquaculture

The candidate must submit confirmations of peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentations

Preferred qualifications

The candidate should have extensive research experience in abalone reproductive and developmental biology

The candidate should have 7+ years of abalone broodstock husbandry and larval culture experience

The Demonstrated managerial and organizational skills

Experience mentoring a diverse group of graduate and undergraduate researchers
