Job Overview

The Associate Director of Advisor Engagement and Retention (AD) oversees the design, development, and implementation of university-wide advisor engagement and development strategy.

The AD is responsible for working with colleges, campus partners, and advising units to create and facilitate high-quality advisor engagement opportunities and experiences that promote a culture of advising excellence and retention.

The AD is also responsible for promoting best practices in hiring and advancement of an equitable advising culture. The AD participates in strategic planning with various stakeholders to pursue a culture of innovation, inclusion, and impact in line with UC’s Next Lives Here strategic direction.

The AD reports to the Director of University Advising Leadership in the Office of Advising and Academic Services.

Essential Functions

  • Lead and support development, evaluation, and implementation of a unified framework and curriculum that supports the professional needs and equitable practices of the UC academic advising community.
  • Provide oversight and guidance for advisor training & development led by the Asst. Director.
  • Lead the development, coordination, facilitation, and assessment of programs including but not limited to exit, stay and culture surveys;

the Advisor Engagement and Retention Advisory Board, advisor study abroad experience, and a new advisor certificate program.

  • Develop and implement solutions, in partnership with the AVP, the Director, and campus stakeholders, to identify and address equity gaps and improve advisor retention and advancement.
  • Leverage student data and advisor culture surveys to create programs and initiatives that enhance advisor support, engagement and retention.
  • Lead, in partnership with advising units and Central Human Resources, the development and implementation of programs and support resources.

Encourage best practices for advisor recruitment, hiring, compensation, development and advancement of an equitable advising culture.

  • In partnership with the Director, foster clear, consistent, and effective communication channels between the Office of Advising & Academic Services and the broader UC advising community.
  • Engage national professional associations, research, and resources to sustain current knowledge of emerging practices and perspectives.

Represent UC, presenting models and outcomes at national conferences.

  • Provide guidance and / or support to UC’s various advising leadership groups as needed (ex. UC Academic Advising Association, UC Advising Conference Committee, administrator groups, etc.)
  • Collaborate with and support campus units in alignment with the Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO). Serve on the OEO Resource Liaisons group.
  • Provide direct and / or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff, as well as graduate assistants and student staff (i.

e., hiring / dismissing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements Required Education

Bachelor's Degree

Required Experience

Five (5) years of experience as an academic advisor, career counselor, human resource specialist, or related function

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Two (2+) years of supervision experience
  • Knowledge and / or Experience in Assessment and Evaluation, Project Management, or Training and Development
  • Knowledge and / or expertise in the areas of Student Success or Retention

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

Office environment / no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
