The HDR Foundation provides grants to qualified organizations that align with HDR’s areas of expertise : education, healthy communities and environmental stewardship.
As an employee-funded and employee-driven foundation, preference is given to organizations located in communities where HDR employees live and work, and those with strong employee involvement.
Since its inception, the HDR Foundation has provided more than $9 million in grants to over 350 organizations.
The Executive Director of the HDR Foundation executes the vision, strategic planning, financial management, fundraising, and grantmaking operations of the HDR Foundation.
Position defines the goals and tactics for the annual Day of Giving’ fundraising campaign, oversees grant-making initiatives, represents the Foundation at internal business group and leadership conferences, and advises on Foundation initiatives, including those that align with HDR, such as ESG reporting, and HDR’s Strategic Plan.
Position reports to the HDR Foundation Board of Directors.
Core Competencies
A deep understanding of applied philanthropy is a core competency for this position. The Executive Director is a nonprofit leader, with honed communications and management skills that include collaborative decision-making, planning & vision-setting, and public and written communications skills.
All are key to building the visibility and employee trust of the HDR Foundation. Personal integrity and a deep commitment to the vision and values of HDR and its employee-owners are critical.
Managerial Functions of the Position
Governance - Plans, directs, and evaluates the organization's day-to-day operations to ensure that all operations of the Foundation are carried out in accordance with Board direction and applicable laws governing private foundations.
Grantmaking With HDR’s administrative support, evaluates grant application submission material. Oversees Foundation grant initiatives including competitive grant cycles, impact grants, employee disaster relief support and targeted funding opportunities, such as Employee Network Group grant program.
Fiscal Controls With HDR’s accounting support, monitors fiscal activities of Foundation and HDR’s global funds. Assures grant awards comply both charity regulations and Board guidance.
Communications and Outreach - Maintains a visible profile for the HDR Foundation by participating in events, conferences, and office visits around the company.
Hosts webinars, develops educational outreach material, and advises employees regarding grant sponsorship and volunteer opportunities within the Foundation.
Span of Control
There are no direct reports to the ED position. The Foundation Director has access to the matrix talent within HDR.
Minimum Qualifications :
- 5 years’ professional experience in either a non-profit or corporate environment having successfully demonstrated organizational management, visioning, public involvement and operational / fiscal acumen.
- Proficient knowledge in professional areas such as philanthropy, development, public policy, governance and board development.
- Demonstrated strengths in interpersonal, oral and written communication. Strong influential abilities through public speaking is a must.
- Demonstrated success in diverse group collaboration.
- Strong analytical abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to attain results across a matrix organization through the power of influence vs authority.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree.
- Experience working for an employee-owned firm.
- Previous experience implementing and developing strategic plans.
- 3 years’ experience working for a grantmaking foundation and / or serving in a leadership role for a non-profit organization.
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of 5 years related experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must.
