The Laboratory Technician Assistant 3 for the Patient Services Center (PSC) manages specimen accessioning accurately and efficiently to provide quality specimens for Laboratory testing.

This position will perform registration procedures accurately / efficiently to ensure regulatory compliance. LTA3s perform specimen collection by confirming patient identification, collecting specimens in proper tubes, utilizing best practice techniques, and accurately label specimens to ensure accurate results.

Training of new Team Members is one of the most important tasks of LTA3.

Requirements for consideration :

Minimum Education :

High School diploma or equivalent. Completion of Phlebotomy training required; completion certificate from a Phlebotomy program or another Allied Health training program, such as Medical Assistant, Medical Lab Technician or Medical Technologist

Years of Experience :

3 years of experience working in a clinical lab environment or as a phlebotomist and 1 year within Inova Laboratory in PSC

Job Responsibilities

• Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with others to optimize job performance and foster working relationships.
• Orders supplies as needed and maintains a clean, orderly and well-stocked department. Notifies appropriate personnel of shortages.
• Ensures accurate specimen processing to maintain specimen integrity while evaluating specimen acceptability for testing (i.e. clots / hemolysis.
• Responsible for specimens collected by special procedures properly per facility policy (e.g. irretrievable specimens, pathology specimens, 24 hour urine, light protected, , chain of custody collections, Newborn Screens).
• Performs proper specimen collection by confirming patient identification, collecting specimens in proper tubes, utilizing best practice venipuncture / capillary techniques and accurately labeling specimens to ensure accurate patient results.
• Demonstrates proper technique to provide standard of care such as proper preparation, (site selection, order of draw), proper technique following standard precautions and proper disposal of supplies according to facility policies.
• Provides complete and accurate training for new team members, ensuring they are ready to complete all duties for their position.
• Other duties as assigned.
