POSITION SUMMARY
- Sales Tax Auditors perform sales and use tax audits of both local and remote businesses and prepare detailed documentation of audit findings, assessments and results;
- provide customer service to internal and external customers via email, phone and in-person; assist with the creation of written sales and use tax content to guide taxpayers and businesses;
assist with publishing content on the city website and in other digital locations; interpret, apply and enforce the Englewood Sales and Use Tax Code.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Examine accounting and business records to verify transactions comply with Titles 4 & 5 of the Englewood Municipal Code for sales and use tax, lodging tax and miscellaneous business licenses.
- Demonstrate professionalism when reviewing audit results with business owner and / or representative, including procedures used, and applicable Englewood Municipal Code.
- Perform less complex building Use Tax and permit compliance audits with the Building Division reports for tax reconciliation related to building permits.
- Initiate and recommend actions on non-compliant cases and works with businesses to resolve issues.
- Responsible for peer review of audits and provides input on tax issues.
- Responsible for researching and presenting possible audits for consideration to the Revenue and Tax Audit Supervisor.
- Responsible for working with new businesses on initial use tax reporting.
- Research and answer taxpayer questions regarding City tax and licensing regulations verbally and in writing.
- Review and investigate refund claims and recommend action.
- Assist in establishing audit procedures and policies, including ordinance updates / changes.
- Work with Licensing and Audit Compliance Technicians in collection efforts in estimated assessments and balances on account.
- Support city at informal and formal hearings related to disputes in tax assessments, including summons and complaints before municipal court.
- Review and work with taxpayers or contacts regarding proposed Voluntary Disclosure Agreements.
- Prepare sales and use tax audit notices of assessment and take all steps necessary to collect audit payments.
- Participate in process improvement efforts in the department.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
- Work with Licensing and Audit Compliance Technicians to license businesses.
- Assist with training of new Sales Tax Auditor and other Finance Department staff.
- Educate taxpayers concerning sales and use tax, lodging tax, licensing, audit, collection procedures, and tax return preparation, including presenting the information in a classroom setting.
- Assist in special projects as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
PREPARATION AND TRAINING
Education : Required- Bachelor’s degree. Major in business or accounting preferred but not required.
Required Driver's License : Valid state driver's license and a clear or acceptable MVR.

Analytical - Strong skills needed to review and evaluate accounting records and audit results. Must be able to read, understand, interpret and enforce Municipal Sales / Use tax ordinances.
Project Management - Strong skills needed to conduct multiple audits simultaneously.
Mathematical - Strong skills needed to complete statistical reports.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a standard office environment, requiring sitting for extended periods of time, and occasional light lifting (up to 15 lbs.
Job requires visual and physical capabilities to work on computers and associated equipment for prolonged periods of time (4-6 hours daily).
SALARY RANGE
$57,970 - $86,955 / annual
