Surgical Scrub Technician
Job Type Full-time Description
Supports superior clinical experiences and optimizes facility efficiency by assisting in patient care under the supervision of a physician and / or registered nurse within her / his scope of practice;
Prepares operating rooms, assists in the reprocessing area, prepares carts, and pulls cases per the surgery schedule at least two days in advance.
Facilitates teamwork by cross-training in the reprocessing area.
Requirements
Pulls cases and / or restocks supplies during downtime or between cases. Assists other team members when not actively involved in patient care during daily assignment.
OR : Maximizes provider productivity by reviewing surgery schedule prior to encounter and ensuring rooms are prepared and stocked per surgeon's preferences, setting up appropriate instrument trays, supplies, and equipment.
Gathers any items needed before the beginning of the procedure. Assist the provider with procedures to efficiently maintain steady patient flow.
Assist in room turnover. Participates as a team member in support of the total perioperative process. PREOP : Maximizes provider productivity by reviewing surgery schedule prior to encounter ensuring bays / rooms are prepared and stocked.
Assists the provider(s) with paperwork, diagnostic testing; helps with turning over bays / rooms efficiently maintaining steady patient flow;
etc. Participates as a team member in support of the total perioperative process.
Supports the accuracy of diagnoses and efficacy of treatment plans by properly preparing labs and / or specimens for testing by outside laboratories.
Labels specimens on the field to ensure accuracy of transfer of specimens to the circulator. Monitors compliance with principles of sterile technique according to the accepted standards.
Considers cost containment by using supplies economically, rotating stock, counting inventory; ensures efficiency by participating in effective turnover time
Reduces patient anxiety and supports patient satisfaction goals by greeting the patient when entering the room; putting the patient at ease, assists in covering the patient for procedure to preserve their modesty, being sensitive to cultural sensitivities, etc.
Participates in the "time-out" to ensure the correct patient and correct surgical intervention according to policy / procedure is being performed and communicates such information to all members of the surgical team.
Assembles and provides properly functioning equipment, supplies, and instruments before the start of procedures; position and adjusts equipment as required during the procedure.
Helps circulator, open supplies, move equipment, and prepare for the case before the patient enters the room. Communicates with the surgeon to plan for special items that are needed for future procedures.
Ensures that supply, drug, instrument, and equipment inventories are maintained and available for procedures and surgeries.
Addresses patient needs during admission to the operating room, communicates to the circulator any needs that have not been met before the beginning of the procedure.
Assists in supply ordering to suit facility needs.
- Minimizes risk to patient, co-workers and self by using personal protective equipment, maintaining a working knowledge regarding the safe and proper use and operation of equipment, checking equipment for safety before using and otherwise observing all safety precautions when performing job duties;
- minimizing opportunity for infection transmission; following sterile procedure guidelines to ensure non-contamination of sterile field;
adhering to bloodborne pathogen standards, demonstrating knowledge of emergency procedures; reporting any unsafe or hazardous condition at once; etc.
Protects patient confidentiality and privacy by complying with HIPAA provisions and protocols whenever creating, using or disclosing medical records, etc.
Keeps professional, clinical, and technical skills up to date by maintaining certification / licensure (if applicable) required for her / his position at all times, participating in staff meetings and in-services, attending meetings and workshops as directed or permitted, reading appropriate journals, etc.
Contributes to patient-centered teamwork environment by becoming cross-trained in the duties of other staff as directed; filling in for other staff as directed by her / his supervisor;
obtaining and maintaining any certification required for positions in which s / he has been cross-trained, works in the sterile processing area when needed, accurately labels items correctly, arranges instrument pans, adheres to sterilization process policies and procedures.
Maintains clean and orderly sterile corridor, operating rooms, and supply rooms.
