JOBSUMMARY
Thisposition plans, supervises and participates in the inspection, maintenance andrepair of the City’s sanitary sewer lift stations and related equipment andfacilities;
and performs other technical, administrative and supervisory workas required. The incumbent works within broad policy and organizationalguidelines and does independent planning and implementation, reporting progressof major activities through periodic conferences and meetings.
ESSENTIALJOB FUNCTIONS :
- Plans, supervises and participates in all preventive and corrective maintenance and repair work at the City’s sanitary sewer lift stations, and in the installation and testing of new and rebuilt equipment;
- Supervises subordinate crew members; supervisory duties include scheduling, instructing, planning and assigning work, reviewing work, maintaining standards, coordinating activities, allocating personnel, assisting with the selection of new employees, acting on employee problems, and recommending and implementing employee discipline;
- Provides for adequate maintenance crew training;
- Develops and implements preventive and corrective maintenance programs; maintains related records;
- Supervises and / or participates in the inspection, troubleshooting and repair of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment;
- Coordinates equipment shut-downs with supervisors;
- Ensures the timely resolution of equipment problems to minimize interruptions of service;
- Supervises general building and grounds maintenance work at the City’s lift stations;
- Inspects all work in progress and at completion for compliance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and standards of quality and safety;
- Participates in the planning and management of capital improvements and major construction projects;
- Assists in preparing equipment specifications and making recommendations for technical equipment necessary for sanitary sewer lift station operations;
- Specifies and orders materials and supplies needed for daily work; maintains stock room and prepares accurate inventory records;
- Ensures the proper maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment;
- Supervises the maintenance of accurate and complete work records;
- Assists with divisional Computerized Maintenance Management System and Asset Management System;
- Coordinates maintenance work with that of other divisions and departments as appropriate;
- Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance from City personnel, customers and the general public regarding areas of responsibility;
- Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to completing forms and reports, attending and conducting meetings, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.;
- Attends meetings, training, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills;
- Works on call 24 hours per day for emergency response; and
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUMREQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK :
- Associate’s degree or vocational degree in engineering, management, mechanical, electrical or closely related field preferred;
- Eight (8) years or more of relevant prior experience;
- Must possess a Level C Wastewater Collection System Operator certification AND Level C Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification OR be capable of obtaining both certifications within two (2) years of hire or promotion;
- Valid South Carolina Class D Driver’s License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
- Knowledge of basic algebra involving variables and formulas and / or basic geometry involving plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas and volumes, and / or computing discounts and interest rates;
- Knowledge of personal computer equipment with skill in the use of Microsoft Office, utilizing Outlook, word processing, and spreadsheet software programs preferred;
- Ability to perform all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, contracts, permits, and standards of quality and safety;
- Ability to supervise or lead others by determining work procedures, assigning duties, maintaining harmonious relations and promoting efficiency;
- Ability to lead, operate or repair complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as wastewater plant equipment, or the application of complex software or systems;
- may involve installation and testing;
- Ability to perform coordinating work involving guidelines and rules, with constant problem-solving;
- Ability to read technical instructions, regulations, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format;

PHYSICALDEMANDS :
The work is consideredheavy in nature and involves walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping,crouching, crawling, reaching, and constantly lifting, pushing or raisingobjects, exerting between 35 to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 100pounds of force on a frequent basis.
The work requires the following physicalabilities to perform the essential job functions : balancing, climbing,crawling, crouching, fingering, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mentalacuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing,stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
