JOB SUMMARY

This position requires a strong background in property management or similar multi-entity full cycle accounting. The Senior GL Accountant is responsible for accurate and timely production of monthly financial statements for an assigned portfolio, as well as supporting the review and oversight of financial statements generated by other GL accounting associates.

Excellent communication skills in effectively explaining financial statements, accounting related processes and procedures are required.

Because this position works largely unsupervised, it is imperative the candidate is a self-starter and sound decision maker, knowing when to seek out needed resources.

This candidate should be an effective problem solver, open to change and trying innovative approaches, while proactively seeking out solutions before challenges arise in the department.

The Senior GL Accountant will maintain strong relationships with clients, community management, and other accounting associates.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares and reviews association financial statements, P&L variances, bank account and other balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Prepares, reviews, and resolves banking issues including the processing of bank account transfers.
  • Monitors bank accounts to identify excess funds for opportunities to improve client investment income.
  • Analyzes and posts adjusting audit entries related to external annual audits and reviews.
  • Supports management in the preparation of annual operating budgets while acting as a resource for the GL accounting team in this annual process.
  • Reviews expense coding and approves invoices in the RealPage Onesite.
  • Assists with review of association shortfall funding requests, as necessary.
  • Identifies and researches variances or unexplained items on the Income Statement and Balance Sheet, making adjusting entries and reclasses as appropriate.
  • Prepares monthly cash flow forecasts and special financial reports as needed.
  • Communicates with management, developers and / or bank representatives, as needed.
  • Identifies opportunities to streamline processes, improve workflows and mitigate risk while ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Troubleshoots any accounting or reporting issues in collaboration with Operations, Regional staff, or Accounting.
  • Collaborates with independent CPA firms in their audit or review of associations, including overseeing the review and posting of adjusting journal entries by the Accounting team.
  • Attends meetings unsupervised, when appropriate, supporting operations as the client accounting resource.
  • Reviews financial statements during the monthly preliminary review process for an assigned portfolio of associations.
  • Prepares and conducts trainings for community management and accounting personnel for standard operating procedures or other relevant accounting concepts.
  • Supports the training and mentoring of new GL accountants fostering continuous learning, growth, and development.
  • Actively supports the onboarding and offboarding process for new and terminating clients.
  • Functions in a supporting role for the various market billings prepared for the Accounting team.
  • Operates with indirect oversight for the Accounting team ensuring any issues with accuracy, timeliness or responsiveness are properly identified and addressed.
  • Assists with special requests or projects as deemed necessary by Management.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree plus 4 additional years of related experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
  • Proven work experience as a Certified Public Accountant or Senior Accountant.
  • Understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting and financial procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Experience with RealPage Onesite software a plus but not required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite.
  • Advanced MS Excel knowledge (familiarity with formulas, VLOOKUPs and pivot tables).
  • Excellent analytical skills with an attention to detail.
  • Integrity, with an ability to handle confidential information.
