The Criminal Justice Division

The Criminal Justice Division of the Oregon Department of Justice conducts specialized local, state, and federal criminal investigations and prosecutions and provides highly trained and experienced special agents, prosecutors, and analysts to fight crime across Oregon;

the Division is the only agency in Oregon that has the unique ability to combine the skills of all three disciplines in a single agency to comprehensively address crime in our communities.

The Division also provides outreach and training to citizens, victim service providers, and members of the law enforcement community to help ensure that Oregonians receive the highest level of service from the criminal justice system.

At this time, we are seeking current or previous prosecutors who are enthusiastic about working with federal, state and local law enforcement to actively investigate and prosecute a wide variety of criminal activity, including homicide, public corruption, election law violations, internet crimes against children, sex crimes, child abuse, officer use of force cases, complex financial crimes, and organized criminal enterprises.

The selected candidate will evaluate and pursue criminal cases, including conflict and specialty cases, at the request of district attorneys throughout the state.

The finalist will also provide advice and support to district attorneys and their deputies and present at trainings across the state.

The selected attorney may be stationed in Salem, Eugene, or Portland depending on need and office space availability. There is also potential for remote work.

We anticipate hiring for multiple positions from this recruitment. The positions and their primary responsibilities are listed below.

In addition, all prosecutors in the Criminal Justice Division may work on any case the office investigates and / or prosecutes.

Election Law Prosecutor

The selected candidate will be the Criminal Justice Division liaison with the Secretary of State’s office regarding election law crimes.

They will lead investigations and prosecutions of election law crimes.

Organized Crime Prosecutor

The selected candidate will be part of the team that investigates and prosecutes drug, firearm, and organized retail theft cases.

District Attorney Assist Prosecutor

The selected candidate will be part of the team that investigates and prosecutes crimes at the request of district attorneys, including major persons felonies and conflict cases.

Required

  • Active member of the Oregon State Bar in good standing on the effective date of appointment.
  • Five or more years practicing law as an attorney.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of criminal and evidence codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with people from a variety of disciplines (e.g., state agency personnel, law enforcement officers, county prosecutors, etc.).
  • Excellent organization, analytical, oral presentation and advocacy, and writing skills.
  • Willing and able to travel statewide, sometimes overnight, in order to meet case and outreach needs.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to public service.
  • Able to successfully clear a comprehensive criminal background investigation and reference checks. Finalists will be subject to a thorough criminal background investigation, as well as thorough employment reference checks.

This OAJA-represented position will be filled at either the Assistant Attorney General or Senior Assistant Attorney General level, salary range $8,298.

00 - $16,113.00 per month, depending primarily on years of legal practice experience and other factors. Employees who are Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) participating members will have their base salary increased by 6.

95% and pay a 6% employee contribution to PERS; the salary range noted reflects base salary only. For a partial list of our benefits, you can learn .
