Job Summary

UCSF Fitness and Recreation inspires wellbeing and health on the UCSF campus through fitness, community, and play. The Recreational Sports unit is an integral part of Fitness and Recreation and provides excellent customer service while ensuring participants participate in Recreational programs and leagues in a safe and fun environment.

The Recreational Sports Staff works under direct supervision of the Recreational Sports Manager and is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day operations of the Recreational Sports unit, which includes customer service, creating and following lesson plans and providing quality instruction to all program participants.

Recreational Sports is looking for high energy, dynamic, positive, outgoing staff to be a part of our unit and UCSF Fitness and Recreation.

The position is part-time at 40% variable with an average working week consisting of 8-16 hours. Access to our wide variety of classes, equipment and facilities is included with employment!

Job responsibilities include :

Prepare curriculum and instruct recreational sports classes. Complete ancillary administrative records and assist with promotions.

Demonstrate excellent customer service skills. Attend staff meetings and in-house training as required. Annually, contribute to the assessment of the class and personal performance evaluation.

Remain current in industry standards prescribed by supervisor. Behave in a professional manner, work as a team player, and adhere to facility policies.

Certifications :

  • Nationally recognized instructor certification or professional experience for hired activity (i.e., Pickleball, Karate, Muy Thai, Squash, Basketball, among other sports) - Preferred
  • American Red Cross CPR certification (must be obtained within 6 months of hire) - Required

Please note : The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point.

An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

UCSF Fitness and Recreation operates two fitness centers at UCSF. We provide fitness and well-being services to UCSF students, faculty, staff, and community members through a broad range of fitness, recreation, aquatics, personal training, outdoor programs, and health and wellness programs.

Required Qualifications

  • Certification to instruct or professional experience in the applicable recreational sports program.
  • American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Training Certification (Must be obtained within 6 months of hire)
  • Working knowledge of program activity practices and procedures.
  • Verbal and written communication skills in the English language, active listening, critical thinking, multi-tasking, time management skills, and dynamic flexibility in adapting to the needs of clients.
  • Ability to exercise independent sound judgment and employ reasoning skills.
  • Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills.
  • Basic skills in computer programs relevant to job duties.
  • Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.

  • Ability to successfully pass FBI and DOJ Criminal Check.

Preferred Qualifications

One year experience as an instructor for specified recreational sports program

License / Certification

  • Certification to instruct or professional experience in the applicable recreational sports program.
